The main house features an idyllic garden with pool
Good to know
Only breakfast is served at the hotel - however, staff are onhand to recommend local restaurants. On request it’s possible to get a lunch á la carte from our own kitchen and served by the pool. Similarly, possible cooking courses on request.
The Italian phrase ‘Albergo Diffuso’ is especially fitting for the concept of the Relais del Maco: it describes a hotel whose rooms are shared among a close group of buildings, each of which has been restored and transformed into a comfortable living space. By staying true to the style of the traditional housing, the hotel helps to maintain the historical character of the local area, while providing guests with an authentic Italian experience. Opened only recently in 2012, The Relais del Maro in particular has renovated everything to the most modern standards.
A boutique hotel: historical houses with personality
The Relais del Maro was designed to offer guests a chance to sample real Italian village life. The layout is therefore less like a hotel, and more like a private, individual living space, full of authentic charm. A lot of this has to do with the original architecture, which has been maintained to compliment the natural surroundings. Also worth noting is the individual décor of every single room – for example, where in one guestroom you may find a retro stand-alone bath, another will feature a modern rain-style shower under a vaulted ceiling. And the service is also just as personalised and charming.
A historic hotel: strongly rooted in the town’s history
Before the Relais del Maro was converted, its main building served as the local butchers. The beautiful architecture of the house however goes much further back: references found in archives verify that it already existed in the early 19th century. It would appear that the lower floor was usually the centre of business, with the upper rooms serving as the owners’ living quarters. This division has remained largely unchanged, even in the present day, as the reception and restaurant are located on the ground floor with the guestrooms above. Both the other houses are also venerable old buildings, and the architecture of the Fienile House is especially unique, accommodating two cosy guestrooms with rustic arched ceilings.
A romantic hotel: beautiful scenery to fall in love with
The historical beauty of the three houses as well as the surrounding area make Relais del Maro a wonderful destination for a romantic getaway. The playful, yet stylish design of the renovated country houses mirrors the Italian lust for life with passionate, strong colour schemes and warm, luxurious furnishings for a sensuous finish. Certain guestrooms are designed with couples in mind, for example rooms 6 and 7 in the main building, which together form the glorious Relais del Maro Suite. A staircase separates this quiet haven from the rest of the house, so that couples can enjoy the lovely view from the guestroom windows in privacy. Also the luxurious furnishings, including a Jacuzzi bath, leave very little to be desired.
Food & Drink: a healthy, hearty breakfast
The day begins at the Relais del Maro in the hotel’s cosy breakfast room, which features an impressive vaulted ceiling. In here guests will find a generous buffet of Italian breakfast specialities, such as homemade cakes, biscuits, focaccia, pizza, biological juices, prosecco, smoked salmon, eggs, and bacon. The selection varies from day to day, as only the freshest ingredients are used - the hotel sources all its food from local producers in the surrounding area, making sure that every ingredient is healthily and organically grown.
Leisure: Hiking & Biking through Liguria
The diverse, unspoilt Ligurian countryside is a paradise for active nature lovers. Relais del Maro provides guests with GPS devices with maps and routes in the beautiful surrounding area. Of course, this datavmay be transferred to individual GPS systems. Alternatively; the hotel provides 20 books to for discovering selected routes accompanied by descriptions and photos of hiking trails. For quick trips and spontaneous excursions to the sea, Relais del Maro provides electric scooter rental and bicycles.
Location: spread around a small area
The Relais del Maro is located near the Ligurian coast, just 17km from the port city of Imperia. The so-called ‘Albergo Diffuso’ is also spread across three buildings, one of which is situated in Borgomaro, the other on the edge of town, and the main building is located just outside.
