Mediterranean or Alpine? Lugano has both. The largest city in the Ticino region of Switzerland lies directly on Lake Lugano. The city's shores are dominated by Mediterranean plant life, while alpine-looking mountain landscapes tower opposite. Lugano's hotels are housed in either pastel-colored villas or modern architecture: the city enjoys an artistic reputation and hosted Hermann Hesse, one of the most famous literary figures of the 20th century.
