History
500 years of history - from a monastery complex to a renowned relais with charm The Congregation of the Holy Roman Universal Inquisition, also known as the Holy Office, was a central authority of the Catholic Church created in 1542 by Pope Paul III through the bull Licet ab initio. It corresponds to the old Inquisition and is now called the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. An old house in the heart of Montferrat, surrounded by well-tended vineyards and pretty red-brick villages, immersed in greenery and contemplative silence. Places that evoke the atmosphere of the 16th century, when the Locanda was still a monastic residence. At that time, it was an estate of the Court of the Inquisition, the seat of the Inquisitor Domenicano di Casale, who was directly dependent on the Church of Rome. Here the Dominican monks, defenders of the harsh rules of the ecclesiastical court, bred silkworms in the attic and produced good wine for the mass. The wine was so good that it aroused the envy of the Franciscan monks, who owned three monasteries in nearby Moncalvo. The rest is part of the shared history of the other owners of the clergy. The divided Montferrat, which Napoleon conquered over the Austrians after the Battle of Marengo, then returned to its rightful owners and became an estate, which was later abandoned and brought back to life in the 1980s as the most cited gourmet stage of Piedmont, where you can taste the famous white truffle accompanied by a wide selection of fine wines such as Barbera and Barolo.
