Hotel description
At the Parador de Cardona in Catalonia you can stay in a genuine castle while also enjoying the luxuries of a 4 star hotel: guests can dine in the King’s Hall, before exploring the enchanted corners of this sprawling castle. The restaurant serves traditional cuisine, while the bar on the 6th floor enjoys fantastic views. The sauna and modern gym ensure relaxation and wellness. The hotel is ideal for couples, but is also popular with businessmen and women, due to the availability of rooms specially equipped for conferences and events.
4 Star Hotel: Bright colours and Gothic elements
All 54 rooms at the Parador de Cardona are very spacious and well equipped. They are furnished in Gothic style and some have four-poster beds. There are 43 standard double rooms, 4 single rooms, 2 duplexes and 3 suites. They are decorated with fine, rich fabrics in light pastel tones and bright colours. The rooms enjoy lovely views over the countryside, Cardoner river and medieval-style town of Cardona. Guests will find rooms encased by ancient walls and arches, but offering modern comforts such as marble bathrooms, satellite TV, minibar and free Wi-Fi. The public rooms are very tastefully decorated and colourful. From the atmospheric cellar vaults right up to the furnished roof terrace, the hotel exudes a charming atmosphere.
Paradores: Mountain fortress with character and history
Paradores are former fortresses or manor houses in exposed and historically important locations, which have been converted into mountain hostels. They are luxury hotels that also seek to preserve the past. The Parador de Cardona is located at a height of 590m; many of the country’s important centres are within a radius of 100km, including Barcelona. This hotel is very well maintained and offers, alongside beautiful panoramic views, an optimal starting point from which to explore the surrounding area. Inside, the hotel includes enchantingly-lit courtyards, towers, battlements and a museum. Overall, the castle stretches over 7 floors.
Historic Hotel: Experience the spirit of the Middle Ages
The Parador de Cardona has a long and varied history. The well-preserved castle was built in 886 AD by Wilfred the Hairy on the remains of a much older construction. The former fortress features a watchtower dating from the 2nd century AD and a Romanesque church built in 1040. The Torre Minyona - the fairytale tower - has a special story: the noble daughter of the count was once jailed inside the high round tower because she fell in love with the Moorish the captain of the castle, something that was strictly prohibited in those days. Each room has a different tale to tell. The views from the castle to the quaint little town of Cardona are beautiful; the town is perched on the slopes of a hill and its narrow streets and medieval houses are well worth a visit.
Eating & Drinking: Rich breakfast and hearty restaurant cuisine
Guests frequently praise the rich breakfast buffet, with both hot and cold dishes. Breakfast is served in-room on request. The hotel’s restaurant offers hearty traditional Catalan cuisine, with seafood, regional game and mushroom dishes. Special dietary needs are catered for. The bar, located on the 6th floor, is also popular with locals on the weekend and is one of the castle’s highlights. A variety of restaurants, bars and cafes can be found in the town of Cardona.
Sport & Leisure: Gym, sauna and sights
Health conscious guests can use the gym and sauna within the hotel’s walls. Walking, horse riding and cycling tours are available into the scenic countryside. The region’s economy historically revolved around salt mining within the Sal Gema mountain. Sightseeing tours lead out into the countryside to the three Molinos de la Sal on the banks of the River Cardoner, or along the Via Salari. Nature lovers will be delighted by the idyllic pre-Pyrenean landscape of the Serra del Verd. Worthwhile sightseeing trips include the disused salt mines in the Montana de Sal cultural park and the Salt Museum in Solsona. Montserrat mountain, with its monastery and museum, is also only 45km away and a must-see.
Location: Endless views of mountains and countryside
The Parador de Cardona is located about 85km from Barcelona, where there is an international airport. The nearest railway station is 32km away in Manresa. The highway is 16km from the hotel. Barcelona is accessed via the C-58 or A-2 to Manresa.
What else?: Banquets, weddings and conferences
The idyllic location and the unique atmosphere means the hotel is a popular location for romantic weddings, festive banquets and business meetings. Every year, the hotel hosts an international medical conference with 600 participants.
