At the end of a long gravel path, secluded from all towns is this old farmhouse on top of a hill amid the rocky Matarranya mountains, forests and deep canyons. Its present-day owner, Alastair Grant, a Scotsman, discovered the ruins in 2002 and restored the half collapsed building, attracted above all due to its unique location. After years of hard work, the farmhouse now looks more beautiful that ever before and even has its original watchtower back. The Mas de la Serra offers in total 9 comfortable guest rooms, a beautiful outdoor pool and numerous peaceful havens, such as the terrace areas, a library, a living room and a pool in the garden.
Nature hotel: High mountains and deep canyons
The Mas de la Serra finds itself in a part of Spain only few know about. Surrounding the farmhouse guests will find far-reaching stretches of wooded mountains with rugged slopes, numerous lakes and a scenic canyon just around the corner. The surrounding area of the Matarranya mountains is a paradise for hikers! Here, guests will find a mix of vast forest areas with beautiful flowers and plants, sheep-farms on lush green mountain meadows and two large conservation areas, where visitors can themselves see animals such as the Spanish ibex, the wild goat, eagles and vultures.
Romantic hotel: Tower suites with fireplace
The location and views of the Mas de la Serra alone are unbeatably romantic. This is only furthered by the beautifully restored farmhouse with its contorted rooms and an interior which is perfect for a cosy holiday. For love-birds the ’Morella’ and ’Valderrobres’ suites are particularly recommended. In the ’Morella’ suite guests can expect a stylish claw-foot bathtub and bed on the upper floor. The ’Valderrobres’ suite offers guests a large fireplace for the winter, and in summer its own terrace with stunning views.
Historic hotel: Old farmhouse with modern charm
The Mas de la Serra finds itself in a former farmhouse with a historic farm tower that originally dates back to the 17th century. After years of restoration work, the farmhouse was officially opened in 2009 as a hotel. The original architecture has largely been retained and consists mainly of stone and wood from the region. In each of the unique rooms guests will find beamed ceilings and rustic stone walls, together with interior designs from all over the world, which the well-travelled Scottish owner has combined together perfectly.
Food and drink: Spanish cuisine with a Peruvian twist
The day begins with an excellent breakfast in a cosy dining room or even out on the terrace in the sunshine. At lunch time Jenny and Luis, the Peruvian hotel team, can prepare light meals when booked in advance. The evening meal is a wonderful time to relax with many dishes ranging from Spanish, Mediterranean and Peruvian cuisine. Pre-dinner drinks are often enjoyed on the terrace, and on warm evenings guests can ever eat here.
Free time and Sport: Hiking and mountain-biking
Opportunities are endless for hikers and those interested in outdoor sports. Surrounding the hotel guests will find short hiking trails that promise beautiful views. Ambitious hikers can also explore the canyons or take to the challenging mountain routes to watch the ibex or take a dip in the mountain lakes. For bikers a former railway line has been transformed into a bike trail. Additionally guests can also enjoy riding excursions, fossil searching trips, sailing and kayaking in a nearby mountain river.
Location: In a remote corner of the world
The Mas de la Serra finds itself in a secluded location, 2km outside of the Aragonese mountain village Fuentespalda (10 minutes from the airport).
