Hotel description
This Arab-style Parador in the southern Spanish city of Jaén is located within the historic Santa Catalina Castle, whose origins date back to the Phoenician era and which was built in the 8th century. Phoenician and Arab rulers once resided behind these historic stone walls until Ferdinand III the Saint conquered the fortress in 1246. Charles de Gaulle also visited the structure in 1970 to document the role of the Napoleonic troops.
Today, guests stay among suits of armor and fireplaces with views of the Sierra Mágina—Andalusia as it has endured through the centuries. In addition to a pool and first-class Andalusian gourmet cuisine, the 4-star hotel offers a unique lodging experience in a historic setting.
The Parador de Jaén in Andalusia
The Parador de Jaén is situated on the Cerro de Santa Catalina hill, right next to the castle of the same name. From its elevated position, this romantic 4-star hotel—with 45 bright guest rooms—offers a fantastic panoramic view of the Sierra Nevada. The Arab fortress is impressive not only because of its monumental outer walls, but also due to its magnificent interior design in the Andalusian Renaissance style, featuring pointed arches up to 20 meters high. The historic atmosphere is ever-present in the public areas—by the pool as well as in the bar, the fireplace lounge, and the restaurant.
At the foot of the Parador lies the old town of Jaén, home to the Renaissance Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción—the only cathedral in Spain with a balcony gallery— as well as the 11th-century Arab baths in the Palacio de Villardompardo, the largest surviving example of their kind in Europe.
Historic Charm & Gourmet Cuisine
The festive Arabic dining room is adorned with natural stone walls, suits of armor, red velvet armchairs, a fireplace, and select artifacts from the Parador’s past—a blend of Oriental culture and the European Middle Ages! In keeping with this theme, the restaurant serves Andalusian specialties, such as partridge salad or wild asparagus with cod, capers, and white truffles.
Living at the Parador
There are four room categories to choose from—Standard Double Room, Superior Double Room, Junior Suite, and an accessible Double Room—all featuring the romantic hotel’s large, handcrafted beds, which are adorned with great attention to detail, including canopies, historic tapestries, and paintings. Three historic halls are available for events: the Sala de Convenciones (86 m², up to 50 people), the Salón Condestable (272.5 m², up to 200 people), and the Salón Lonja (129.9 m², up to 130 people).
