Hotel description
Location: Old town location with river views
The 1872 River House is situated in a small side street right on the banks of the Duoro with the old town of Porto behind it. The city center can be reached in 10 minutes on foot.
Aside from its great location, what makes this Porto hotel stand out from the rest is its combination of historic architecture and contemporary design. As you might have guessed from its name, it was built in 1872. The rooms have a wonderful atmosphere with their stylish furniture in a neoclassical design set against the building’s original exposed stone walls. The hotel terrace with river views is the perfect place for breakfast, a snack or a cup of coffee. The 1872 River House is owned and run by Teresa. She’s joined by a very friendly, attentive team of staff.
City hotel: Romantic location & nice service
From its unique riverside location, the 1872 River House offers romantic views over the river and the boats that navigate up and down it, as well as over an old port wine cellar. It doesn’t get much more authentic than this in one of Portugal’s oldest towns. At the same time, you’re also just a short distance from the old town. Teresa and her team of staff are on hand 24/7 to make visitors to the city feel welcome and well looked-after.
Design hotel: Exposed stone & elegant furniture
Each and every one of the just 8 guest rooms is absolutely charming, and has its own individually selected furnishings. What they do all have in common though is the exposed stone walls which lend the trendy design a rustic edge. Expertly chosen pattern and color combinations and Portuguese handiwork, like for example the traditionally painted azuelejos (tiles), round off the overall look perfectly. Just as beautiful is the small communal living room with stone walls, natural wood flooring, smart furnishings in caramel colors and large windows overlooking the Duoro.
Food & drink: Breakfast with views of the Duoro
The 1872 River House is run as a classic Bed & Breakfast. In the morning there’s a delicious buffet breakfast to enjoy. In addition you can choose eggs or an omelet, freshly made for you straight from the stove. At lunch and for dinner you’ll find a wide range of restaurants all within a short stroll of the hotel.
Leisure & sport: Ideal basis for exploring the city
The hotel does not have any leisure or spa facilities. But it’s the perfect base for visitors who want to visit the town. The hotel team are full of good tips to help you plan your day. You can also take a free ’surfstick’ with you which means you can have internet access wherever you are in Porto. For breaks in between the sightseeing you can sit and enjoy the river views from either the terrace or the small lounge.
