Hotel description
The Castello di Tomano is an exceptionally romantic castle hotel dating back to the 11th century. It is situated in the heart of the Chianti region, which is a top spot for wine lovers to visit. But if you want to experience the charm of a genuine knight’s castle, then you’re also in the right place. Both the secluded location and the well-maintained building of this medieval castle win couples and history lovers over within seconds. The former dungeon is today home to the wine cellar. The prettiest rooms are the historically furnished suites in the main wing. At the top of the tower you’ll find a sun terrace with unforgettable views over the surrounding wooded countryside.
Whichever part of the Castello di Tornano you’re in, it’s impossible to not feel like you’ve taken a trip back in time. The dominant main building with its meter-thick walls, stone staircases and impressive tower has a history of almost a thousand years. The guest rooms are spread between the main building, the tower and a few farm buildings and servants’ quarters on the grounds. On your way to your room you’ll spot real suits of armor, as well as antique paintings, lamps and furniture from a range of eras. The guest rooms themselves are also finished in a historic style with baldachin beds and antique furniture under rustic wooden beams. In short: a really pretty picture!
Next to the hotel the Selvolini family owners also run a wine making business on the grounds of the Castello. Guests can ask to visit the cellar and book a range of wine tastings. In the hotel’s own wine shop you can also buy a bottle of your favorite to take home with you.
The hotel’s kitchen provides guests interested in the local cuisine with a real treat. The menu focuses on refined, delicious dishes from the region, including some produce made actually at the hotel itself like wine and olive oil. In the morning a good continental breakfast is served, and in the evening there’s a changing 5-course menu featuring dishes typical of traditional Tuscan cooking.
In keeping with the focus on wine and regional cuisine, the Castello can organize cookery classes for small groups in the hotel kitchen. In the full-day course, guests will learn how to prepare a 4-course menu that is then eaten together at the end. But if you just want to relax you’ll find an idyllic swimming pool in the castle gardens. The hotel also has a tennis court on the grounds.
The Castello di Tomano has a really secluded location in the middle of the countryside on a hill surrounded by woodland, 20km north of Siena. Arriving at the hotel via a gravel road that winds up the hill and is steep in parts is not the most comfortable of journeys, but you’ll be rewarded with an absolutely stunning location surrounded by hills and woodland!
