Hotel description
Surrounded by large meadows, the hotel offers guests complete serenity and relaxation with its breathtaking mountain views, natural swimming pool and a small but high-class spa. The art-lodge beautifully blends contemporary art and innovative design with the traditional architecture of its rural buildings. Within its walls and gardens, the hotel hosts its own art gallery space, regularly inviting regional artists to exhibit their work. The art-lodge has an idyllic and quiet atmosphere which perfectly suits guests who are looking for a relaxing retreat. Of course, with its exhibitions, art film collection and art tours on offer, the hotel is also perfect for all art-lovers.
A Designer Hotel: Artist workshops, a large gallery and an inspiring sculpture park
The founders of art-lodge, Katrin and Dirk Liesefeld, were originally scoping out this farm complex as a place to house their private art collection. Stumbling upon this 300 year-old treasure nestled in Nock Mountains, they decided to take over what remained of the original building and property and converted the main house and the barn to a hotel, and established a large art gallery. Located in the town of Verditz in the state of Carinthia, the art-lodge has 16 exquisite rooms in the restored barn, each individually designed by a different artist from Austria. Throughout the premises, selected works of art and modern furniture blend with the farm´s natural and carefully preserved quaint charm. All of the rooms feature free Wi-Fi, a flat screen TV, private bathroom and a balcony or terrace with panoramic views of the natural pool or Alpine scenery. Art is ubiquitous here, with guests able to enjoy not only the permanent art exhibition, but also the temporary exhibitions organised through the "Artist-in-Residence" program. Throughout the premises, artworks abound, including outside where the art-lodge has installed an inspiring and ever-expanding sculpture park. Once a week, guided tours are offered through the exhibitions. Guests and visitors can also enjoy perusing the hotel´s art book collection and watching art films in the cosy video lounge.
A Mountain Hotel: Serenity amidst mountain pastures in a secluded atmosphere
In this mountain lodge style hotel, guests have the optimal conditions for relaxation and quiet, as the art-lodge is located 1,058 metres up a mountainside. Guests can inhale the pure mountain air while resting on the outdoor chaise-lounge chairs with views of the mountains and the valley. Whatever the season, guests can immerse themselves in the surrounding Alpine landscape and enjoy sitting out on the art-lodge´s natural stone terrace. To complete the rejuvenating atmosphere, guests are treated to fresh and creative international cuisine at the art-lodge´s restaurant which has a cosy common room with a fireplace, games and art books.
A Sports Hotel: Intimate spa area, large outdoor area and plentiful nature
The art-lodge is ideal for guests wishing to enjoy mountain sports of all kinds throughout the year. In the summer, guided hikes are offered once a week. In the colder months, many guests come for skiing or cross country skiing – for which guests need only step outside the front door! Children will enjoy playing on the hotel’s private mountain pasture, perfect for sledding or building snow sculptures. After a long day of being active, guests will revel in the art-lodge´s intimate, but exquisite wellness area which offers a Finnish sauna and infrared cabins in the woodshed, and a small natural pool just adjacent. The organic pool is fed by clear spring water without chlorine. For ultimate relaxation, guests can book individual massages – done in the privacy of their own room. The massage options range from the restorative Lomi-Lomi (Hawaiian style) massage, to foot reflexology, lymphatic drainage and sports massages.
Food & Beverage: À la carte breakfast and healthy, fresh and creative cuisine
A rich, healthy breakfast served à la carte is available to guests each morning, which in pleasant weather, can be savoured outside on the hotel´s stone terrace. The offer always includes healthy, regional and optional vegan dishes. In the restaurant of the art-lodge, "Chef Dirk" along with special guests conjures up creative dishes with their "Art-Cooking"style. During the high season, the restaurant is open four days a week and offers plenty of healthy menu options ranging from Asian to Mediterranean, often incorporating fresh ingredients from the hotel´s garden. For vegetarians and vegans, there are separate menus which offer healthy dishes prepared in an environmentally friendly way.
Sports & Leisure: Hiking or skiing right outside the front door
The art-lodge offers the perfect ambience and setting for either complete relaxation or complete fitness. On its premises the hotel hosts a small spa, indoor and outdoor art exhibitions and a small, cosy library space with information on guided hikes in the Nock Mountains, which offer many trails. The nearby lakes of Carinthia (Wörthersee 21 kilometres, Millstätter Lake 18 kilometres and Afritzer Lake 6 kilometres) offer numerous water sports such as swimming, diving, parasailing, water skiing, wakeboarding or fishing. In winter, guests can take huge advantage of the hotel having direct access to the ski slopes, with a mid-station just 300 metres away. For guests who enjoy exploring the city as much as the countryside, the nearby capital city of Slovenia, Ljubljana, is only an hour’s drive away. Popular for its beautiful, historic Old Town, Ljubljana is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Location: Deep in nature but with easy transportation access
The art-lodge, perched at 1,058 metres on a mountainside, is located right above the village of Verditz, tucked into the Carinthian Nock Mountains. Despite its serene and remote setting, the art-lodge is easily accessible from the surrounding cities and airports. The Klagenfurt airport is a 40-minute drive, and the cities of Graz and Salzburg are only about 1,5 hours by train. There is ample, free parking right at the art-lodge, which also offers a shuttle service to the Klagenfurt airport.
Special Highlights: Permanent and temporary art exhibitions
Since 2011, the art-lodge has been supporting young artists from Austria by inviting them to join the hotel´s "Artist-in-Residence Program." This program allows artists to display their work directly in the hotel´s gallery and premises, with the exhibitions also open to the general public. There are also permanent exhibitions found in and around the main buildings.
