The cultural and artistic hub of St. Tropez: Quai Jean Jaurès
district surrounding Quai Jean Jaurès by the port is a fabulous location to start discovering St. Tropez. Chic restaurants and bar terraces can be found on the land side of the port, whereas shiny yachts occupy the harbour. The modern art gallery, Musée de l’Annonciade, is located next to the harbour. It houses a precious collection of artworks by painters who have either lived in St. Tropez, or were inspired by this fascinating town. The Quai Jean Jaurès appeals not only to art lovers, but also to those interested in history. Built in 1602, the St-Tropez Citadel is a magnificent castle, which was originally built as part of a large fortification complex intended to defend St. Tropez, and France against Spanish attacks. Built on a hill reaching out to the east of the city, the castle grounds are hauntingly beautiful.
An idyllic town market place: Place des Lices
Place des Lices is the charming main square of St. Tropez, located close by to many of the comfortable 5 star hotels in Sttropez. The square contains a green park, which is characterized by huge plane trees under which local regulars like to gather for a game of bowls, a popular game in the region. The square also houses fine cafes and restaurants, which offer tasty regional delicacies. Place des Lices hosts one of the liveliest recurring events in St. Tropez: a huge, traditional market, which is held twice weekly throughout the year. Here, residents and visitors peruse the stalls selling fresh, local produce such as cheeses, sausages, pastries, olives, spices, fruits, and vegetables. The market is also an ideal venue for souvenir hunters and fashion enthusiasts, with many arts and crafts, and clothing stalls.
The paradise across the peninsula: Les Salins
Located on the other side of the peninsula, Les Salins is about a 10min car drive away from the centre of St. Tropez and offers a serene atmosphere. Delicious food can be enjoyed by the beach in exclusive restaurants and bars. Small but lovely beaches abound in this charming part of the town. The idyllic Plage des Salins is the main beach of this district. Surrounded by gigantic pines and divided by a little creek, which leads inwards to a marsh, Plage des Salins is a 600m-long beach which offers a peaceful environment even during the high summer season. A splendid activity is to take a coastal walk from Plage des Salins to Plage de Pampelonne, the longest beach on the peninsula.
