The white castle was built in 1872, though its interior was completely renovated in 2006. The light-filled building is of Nordic design, and features 36 elegant and stylish rooms and suites, as well as a modern spa. The gourmet restaurant Felix and Sandwig beach bistro provide culinary delights, while the large garden and sun terrace with views over the water offer peace and relaxation.
Beach Hotel: White sand beach and water sports
The blue waters of Flensburg Fjord lap the fine white sands of the beach in front of Strandhotel Glücksburg. There is direct access from the hotel to the free public beach, which is very family friendly due to its gently sloping shoreline. A long jetty leads out over the water and there are comfortable beach chairs, showers, changing rooms and toilets available. A lifeguard is on duty to ensure safety, and younger guests will enjoy the playground. Guests can rent water sports equipment on the beach or take boat trips out on the fjord.
4 Star Hotel: Scandinavian design with a personal touch
The interior and furnishings of this 4 star superior hotel are the work of Scandinavian designers Poul Henningsen and Arne Jacobsen. The intention was to combine the glamorous style of the Belle Époque with fresh Nordic elegance. Though all the rooms are furnished with natural materials and decorated in bright colours and tones, no two are identical. According to the castle-like character of the hotel, there are cosy attic rooms with sloping exposed beams, round rooms, and rooms with bay or arcade windows. The hotel also offers both a junior and bridal suite, as well as holiday apartments. The modern bathrooms, filled with natural light, are a special feature. Guests can choose from Classic Single or Classic Double rooms with park views, or Premium Double rooms with sea views. The rooms are equipped with a seating area, desk and balcony or terrace. All include satellite TV, minibar, coffee and tea maker, complimentary bottled water, telephone, radio, bathrobes, hairdryer and toiletries. The hotel’s cosy hearth room and lobby encourage visitors to linger. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, as well as in the rooms.
Spa Hotel: Sauna, massages and beauty salon
During the hotel’s redesign in 2006, special emphasis was placed on creating generous and tasteful spa facilities. Now guests can pamper themselves in the hotel’s 400 square-metre spa at no extra cost. The Finnish sauna, Turkish steam bath, infrared cabin and organic sauna guarantee relaxation. In the beauty salon, guests can enjoy professional treatments utilising relaxing and revitalising products from The Organic Pharmacy. Meanwhile, a range of Asian, full body and hot stone massages help bring the body and soul back into natural balance. A relaxation room and gym complete the extensive facilities.
Eating & Drinking: Award-winning cuisine and bistro by the sea
An extensive breakfast buffet is served each morning in the light-filled, wood-panelled Felix restaurant. The buffet includes both hot and cold dishes, with an emphasis on regional and organic food. Breakfast can also be enjoyed in-room or à la carte. For half-board guests, there is a breakfast and dinner menu. The restaurant serves light bistro cuisine during the day and gourmet culinary delights in the evening, for which the kitchen has been awarded a Gault Millau ’toque’. The restaurant’s special features are a lava stone grill and uncomplicated cuisine, with a focus on fresh produce and a large vegetarian selection. In addition to the main Felix restaurant, which is open all day, the Sandwig bistro offers simple cuisine, cakes and a beach bar from noon until 22.00.
Sport & Leisure: Spa, water sports and hiking
In addition to the spa - decorated in soft natural tones and offering a beauty salon, sauna and massages - the Strandhotel Glücksburg includes a modern gym, with personal trainers available on request. There is a bicycle rental service, and the beautiful surroundings are ideal for walking and hiking. A Nordic walking park is also nearby. Whether exploring the Flensburg Fjord or the wild and romantic Holnis Peninsular, there is plenty to see and do. There are two other beaches nearby that are perfect for swimming, while from the hotel it is just a short wander through a charming park to the romantic Glücksburg Castle. Boat trips on the Baltic Sea, to the Ochseninseln (Ox Islands), to Flensburg or to Denmark are also available. Nearby there is a marina, as well as 18- and 9-hole golf courses with a 72-handicap. Additionally, guests can go sailing, windsurfing, fishing, water skiing and canoeing on Flensburg Fjord.
Location: On the waterfront overlooking Denmark
The hotel looks out over the fjord to the Ochseninseln (Ox Islands) and beyond to the Danish coast opposite. The old port and trading city of Flensburg is about 9km away and the smaller town of Glücksburg just 3km. There is a public bus stop about 50 metres from the hotel. The motorway is less than 10km, and Hamburg International Airport is about 160km. The port and main railway station in Flensburg are about 12 km away.
