Vienna Hotels: Cultural heart, casual indulgence in The Ring

by Holly Maguire June 11, 2009, 9:57 am

In the cultural heart of Vienna, Austria, The Ring – Vienna’s Clasual Luxury Hotel bucks the trend of traditional 5 star hotels, with a smiley, helpful concierge team who are genuinely friendly and discrete. Just 2 years old, the property retains the atmosphere of a boutique hotel with stylish chocolate browns, greens and rusty orange décor, enormous cuddle-up beds and shiny plasma televisions. With sound systems in the white, angular bathrooms, sing along whilst lathering up with Molton Brown toiletries.

The beautiful, 70s styled suite with fabulous metallic four poster bed, snakeskin headboard and modern art is a favourite haunt for the rich and famous, Beyonce from Destiny’s Child amongst the stars who’ve slept here. The spacious dining room glimmers with an enormous chandelier, though the At Eight restaurant is the place to feast on an a la carte breakfast selection. Mmmm!

The cosy spa area on the top floor has a steamy sauna with a unique view of the Baroque Karlskirche and the Viennese horizon. Chill out here before making your way to the designer bar, Drings, with tasty cocktails and an exclusive pre-opera quencher of a glass of champagne accompanied by juicy prawns. The Vienna Opera house is literally just around the corner, whilst Schönbrunn Palace is on the direct line from the Karlsplatz underground station. Check in to The Ring to be in the heart of cultural Vienna and indulge in casual luxury!

Unlike Gesa, my own childhood was spent climbing trees and cosying up at night with my numerous siblings in various campsites, or admiring the mismatched interiors of delightful 2* motels whilst moseying across Europe. In my tender years, I’ve found cultural enrichment in the French Alps, Spain and Bavaria, interspersed with fleeting trips to the Caribbean and a grubby month on the southeast Asian backpacker trail… anywhere with decent weather, good food and great people. I’ve been lucky enough to indulge in lavish beachside retreats and step out from grand, opulent hotels into big city shopping paradises; however, the mouldy student digs, bamboo huts, bumpy trains and deserted beaches along the way have ultimately made me appreciate the luxury, style and design that a seriously sexy hotel should offer.
