You don’t have to make a pilgrimage to be able to stay over in a religious landmark anymore. Instead, book a hotel stay at the Kruisherenklooster in Maastricht! This impressive, city-center monastery is today a modern design hotel and its stunning monastery church now an award-winning gourmet restaurant. There are plenty of historic buildings that have been converted into modern hotels, but the concept here is like no other: behind the medieval walls of the Kruisherenklooster you’ll find 50 guest rooms with a surprisingly fashionable design. Gourmet diners that like sampling creative cuisine in a unique setting will love the Entresol restaurant in the former church.
Historic hotel: Smart design behind monastery walls
The Kruisherenklooster dates back to the 15th century. In addition to the actual monastery building, the grounds take in a wonderful monastery garden and a Gothic church, which today houses the hotel restaurant. Up until around 1800 it was home to the monks of the Kruisheren order. Since then the monastery served a variety of different purposes until it was completely restored around 10 years ago, and converted into a hotel.
Design hotel: Mix of old and new
Stepping over the threshold into the Kruisherenhotel Maastricht is like a trip through time. The leap from medieval to present day is symbolized by a red-lit copper tunnel at the entrance. Once you’re through the tunnel you’ll find yourself standing in the nave of the old monastery, which has been given a modern-day look with its avant-garde designer furniture. The interiors are the work of the internationally known designer Henk Vos with the lighting added by Ingo Maurer. The trendy restaurant under the high cross vaults of the church is particularly impressive. But all of the other rooms and the guest rooms offer great visual surprises from the red-upholstered bar to the trendy furniture in the inner courtyard to the floor-to-ceiling art photographs in the guestrooms. Whichever room you’re in it’s the mix of old and new styles that is the focus: bold, colorful stained glass windows or frescoed ceilings meet modern art and minimalist design.
Food & drink: Gourmet creations for dinner
The hotel restaurant Entresol is housed in the old monastery chapel, which makes every meal at the Kruisherenhotel into a truly unique experience. A futuristic light installation that looks like flying saucers will catch your attention straight away. But the main event here is of course the cuisine, which has won 12 Gault Millau points. Right next to the restaurant is the hotel bar which also has a really original design. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine or cognac and take in this unforgettable setting.
