yes, we will be using this again on our next trip

We booked this hotel as it was dog friendly (we have 2) and convenient for the Santander ferry. The location is to die for. Situated next to a 13th century convent courtyard and all the outlying church buildings and the village is full of old "palacios" from the Spanish Golden Age and the river cutting through. Our room was on the top floor and was eccentrically and charmingly decorated with an enormous jacuzzi style bath. The only snag is it had no window to view the town, only a skylight, so it was a bit claustrophobic of us. Others may not mind. Breakfast was nicely laid out with a good selection of breads and cheeses as well as cereals and fruit. Coffee was OK. The hotel has no restaurant but the village has various bars and restaurants. We were off season and during the week so the more prestigious restaurants were not open. However the charming girl in reception recommended one of the bar/restaurants in the village and we were delighted. One of the best meals we’ve had in Spain, all done impromptu and especially for us with utter charm and generosity. We were delighted. Yes worth staying but no english or languages so be prepared for a more spanish approach!

Hotel description

Old Dominican Monastery of Our Lady of Pity (Nuestra Señora de la Piedad) was founded in 1509 by the Bishop of Calahorra, Don Juan de Velasco. It is a Historic and Artistic Monument of Catholic Monarchs and Plateresque style, built in masonry stone with important ornaments and with a carpentry or woodwork ceiling. The Hospedería (=rooming house) occupies part of what used to be the Saint Nicholas School (=Colegio de San Nicolás) and the Ladie´s School of Our Lady of the Pity (= Nuestra Señora de La Piedad), a true work of Art in its old times due to its enormous dimensions and its slender architecture. Located in one of the best places of the village, it has been accurately called the Aranjuez of Rioja. After a careful restoration and decoration work done by the designer Pedro Ortega and his team, fifteen well furnished huge rooms open their doors to us. Don´t forget to pay attention to the original decorative elements ( precious stones set in forged metal, singular washbasins, mirrors, curtains, Lamps, paintings, Trampantojos (=paintings on doors and in the walls). The big walls of our hotels shelter spaces and corners that make us go back in time and enjoy ourselves with the visual effects that its original decoration offers us.
