At the center of the Medina in Tangier
The Kasbah, the quarters in which the Dar Sultan is located, is situated high above the Medina and once was the neighborhood of the Gnawas and the administrative part of the Medina of Tangier. Here, behind the ramparts, the sultan lived with his family. For a long time, the buildings here decayed. But now, where until only five years ago only cheap pensions and hostels awaited travelers, an impressive change takes place: In the Kasbah, bit by bit, every traditional Moroccan residence is turning into a small, elegant boutique hotel. One of the most beautiful and magnificent is the riad Dar Sultan.
A very special riad
The bed & breakfast Dar Sultan of the French couple Jean-Pierre and Maité Durand is a beautiful example for traditional Moroccan architecture and art, which is famous for its Zelliges (a kind of mosaic) and Bejmats (special tiles). So called Maâlems (master craftsmen) from Fez and Marrakech carefully and authentically renovated the building in French-Moroccan style and turned it into a dreamy riad. Here, the sights of Tangier are close and you can enjoy a view reaching from Tangier to the Spanish coast.
Fittings and style at the riad
The three-story building of the Dar Sultan surrounds an elegant courtyard with Andalusian marble and a magnificent fountain. The owners placed objects they bought on trips around the world in the corners and niches of the bed & breakfast, creating a witty mixture of Moroccan, Italian, Turkish and Indian objects. A small library is available to guests, providing information on Morocco and its authors and an opportunity to smoke the Narguile (water-pipe).
