Starkbierfest: Munich city hotels

by Holly Maguire March 18, 2010, 10:18 am

The Starkbierfest 2010 is well underway in the southern city of Munich, Germany. This is the first beer festival of the season and involves the typical litre-sized beer mugs here being filled up with a strong, ale-like brew – enough to get the heartiest of lederhosen-clad stomachs churning. The festival coincides with the fasting season of Lent – and is said to have been started by monks combining all ingredients to make a satisfying “meal”. And one litre of the strong stuff contains 680 calories! Until 27th March, the Nockherberg beer hall will be filled to the rafters with jovial locals and big bands. All over the city, various breweries conjour up special beers with between 8 and 12% alcohol for the occasion – here is our essential pick of stylish Munich hotels to crawl back to!

Nockherberg festivalHotel La Maison

Stylish, intimate boutique hotel Hotel La Maison is tucked away in the bourgeois Altschwabing district near Münchner Freiheit. The area is peppered with cafes and independent boutiques, and not far from the University, opera and city centre. The warm, sensual colours and divine cuisine guarantee a relaxing stay.

Bang in the city centre, the delicious Viktualienmarkt, beautiful Frauenkirche and designer shopping are just minutes away from Schiller 5 Hotel + Boardinghouse. Make this your home away from home – the sleek, spacious rooms each has a useful kitchenette!

Lovers of luxury will find the exclusive modern comforts and spa and restaurant offerings of Le Méridien Munich this central city hotel a dream. Though the Hofbräuhaus, cool Sendlinger Tor area and the lively Glockenbachviertel nightlife are within walking distance, this is a true city hotel oasis where one deserves to indulge.

ITB 2010: Bloggers Summit summary

by Gesa Noormann March 12, 2010, 1:04 pm

The Escapio bloggers left the Bloggers Summit at ITB 2010 feeling refreshingly inspired, after invigorating exchanges and controversial discussions with participating online tourism experts. The international make up of the PhoCusWright Blogger Summit attendees was impressive, as there are few comparable events with so many representatives from different countries. It was of course great fun catching up with familiar faces and networking with exciting new contacts at the cocktail reception organised by news portal tnooz .

The conference’s burning issue was social media, which now plays an explosively significant role in online tourism. The two afternoon workshops were also focused on this theme (Uwe Frers, founder and Managing Director of Escapio was on the podium – see blogpost). Noone in the travel industry should underestimate the potential of interacting with customers via Twitter, blogs or Facebook, where a demanding target audience can be reached, though quick reaction times are often necessary. On the other hand, it is becoming increasingly clear that social media is simply an extra marketing tool which shouldnt be overrated – ultimately success comes down to the quality of a product, and PR-related social media can only reap the benefits if the face of the brand truly reflects the content.

The tourist industry’s next challenge will be mobility. 2010 is the year of iPhone Apps, and the same technology will soon be integrated into car navigation systems. If you fancy surprising your lover with a romantic weekend break in a great luxury hotel, you’ll soon be able to do this on the move. Fewer and fewer people are subscribing to daily newspapers, and for jet-setters like PhocusWright President Philip Wolf, delivered newspapers make their way directly to the trash 150 days a year. Web 2.ß has become so independent that it’s no longer a question of if you’re online – rather where, and how smart your communication gadget is.

It wont just be the usual frequent flyers getting about this year – 2010 is looking promising for the whole tourist industry. Things are looking up after the worst of the financial crisis, at least this was the impression at the busy ITB Berlin 2010. On top of your usual summer holiday, Escapio is constantly putting together exclusive offers with the best hotels – so you can enjoy a few more indulgent days all year round. Just check out our website!

ITB 2010: PhoCus Wright Bloggers Summit

by Gesa Noormann March 11, 2010, 3:12 pm

The PhoCus Wright Bloggers Summit at the ITB 2010 kicked off as usual today with the “town hall” discussion, this year moderated by Philip Wolf, President and CEO of PhoCus Wright. Numerous notable travel industry bloggers are here, including “Happy Hotelier” Guido van den Elshout, Lammertal patriot Rainhard Lanner and Arndt Aschenbeck, who oversees the specialist tourist magazine fvw’s eBlog. In contrast with last year, the question isn’t whether people are using short messaging site Twitter at all, but rather whether Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn provide the effective way to communicate with clients and/or business partners. At the forefront of topical themes are Apps which will soon be found in cars and Ethernet from set top boxes.

Bruce Rosard, Rainer EdlingerKevin May

According to PhocusWright’s Bruce Rosard and other participants in the “Interactive meeting and idea sharing,” social media is overtaking blogging so significantly that next year’s Bloggers Summit will likely be renamed the “Social Media Summit”. RSS feeds and Twitter news feeds through Tweetdeck are favoured amongst travel industry professionals over portals like Bloglines Blogs. Bloggers in Asia, however, seem to be more respected than classic journalists; in Singapore there are awards for different blog categories. The absolute celebrity in the Summit auditorium is Kevin May, founder and chief editor of tourism news portal tnooz which almost every participant admitted to regularly reading. (see also our Interview with Kevin May)

PhocusWright deserve a huge compliment for the great organisation, excellent moderating (thanks to Philip Wolf, Bruce Rosard and Kevin May), thought provoking themes and suitably inspiring feedback from the participants. The Americans are also a big step ahead of us regarding technical interaction. Even in the age of web 2.0 and smart phones, the ITB congresses are still receiving audience feedback via text message, whilst PhocusWright is of course using Twitter. The new ITB App may save you lugging around a heavy catalogue, but compared to the PhocusWright App, it remains more of a trade fair guide than an interactive tool.

Top 5 Berlin Sights

by Gesa Noormann February 18, 2010, 10:33 am

I’ve seldom had as many visitors as I get now that I live in Berlin. The German capital has become Europe’s number one hot spot. And for all of you who don’t have that friend in Berlin with an extra couch, Escapio offers you a selection of the best Berlin hotels, everything from hip to chic. Berlin’s mayor Klaus Wowereit’s now famous line about his city being „poor but sexy“ sums up this place quite succinctly. Indeed, Berlin tourists are particularly interested in experiencing that certain je ne sais quoi flair so unique to this once so divided city. Nowhere else visitors will find as many parties going on as here. New clubs, fashion labels and bands seem to burst onto the scene every day. And yet, perhaps the best song to reflect this particular Berlin mood is the ambivalent Peter Fox‘ anti-hymn hit Black to Blue“ with its telling line:„Good morning Berlin, sometimes you use to be so ugly.“

There are so many museums, exhibitions and monuments in Berlin that it’s very hard to know where best to start. And this is why we have put together our own selection of top 5 Berlin sights, just to jump-start that big city feeling for you.

1) Get things going with a simple bus ride. Take a city tour on the city’s own BVG bus line 100 from Zoologischen Garten to Alexanderplatz. The ticket will only set you back 2.10 euros for a ride that will take you all the way across town along sites that include a great look at the Tiergarten, Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and Hackescher Markt. And while you’re at it you can enjoy the innovative audio guide from Culture-to-Go. Berlin creative artists’ narratives turn this bus ride into an amusing and highly informative city tour.

2) Of all the Berlin museums, the Pergamon Museum is arguably the most impressive. Constructed between 1910 and 1930 on the city’s famous Museum Island (the island itself a sight worth seeing), it has attained world-wide fame primarily through the awe-inspiring reconstructions of three particularly famous ancient world structures – the colossal Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus and the stunning blue Ishtar Gate, with its accompanying Procession Road to Babylon and Mshatta Facade.

3) Taking in a concert at the Berlin Philharmonie is an absolute must for any music enthusiast who visits Berlin. And even if Sir Simon Rattle may not be conducting when you attend, this imposing concert hall always offers its listeners an unforgettable sound experience. Many concerts are booked out months in advance of course, but with a little luck you might get one of the tickets that were returned.

4) In order to get a true feel for the many-faceted and sometimes subtle differences between the long-divided eastern and western sides of the city, the best way to go is to take a closer look at two particularly representative districts: The elegant stores, cafes and restaurants located on streets near Charlottenburg’s Savignyplatz are perfect examples of the old West-Berlin culture. Berlin-Mitte in the east, on the other hand, is despite some overly zealous reconstruction work in places. An inviting district due to the large number of original structures built in the old Berliner building style still standing and the lively art and art gallery scene that has established itself there. Dozens of galleries have popped up along Auguststraße, Oranienburger Straße and Linienstraße. And directly in the hip Oranienburger Straße neighborhood is where you can find the chic design hotel Casa Camper where not just scene-insiders feel at home.

5) Prenzlauer Berg’s Kulturbrauerei offers a huge array of concerts, films and other cultural events. Assorted cafes and restaurants are housed directly in the old brewery complex, but nothing is stopping you from also stepping outside and taking a little walk along Kastanienallee and plunge yet a bit deeper into the another wild side of the bustling Berlin scene.

Berlinale: Stars on the red carpet

by Sonja Franke February 12, 2010, 10:03 am

Attentive readers of the Escapio weblog surely will have read the worthwhile article on Berlinale 2010. But as with every “gossip” topic, you never get tired of announcing the latest news.

So let us take stock – in the case of such a major event usually consisting of name-dropping. Which celebrities will attend? What will they wear? And above all: who is going to stay in which hotel?

A few of these world-shaking questions have already been answered, thus I would like to focus on the hotels in Berlin more suited to visitors than to stars and starlets.

So the celebrity hotspots Grand Hyatt Berlin, Hotel The Mandala and Hotel Q are out of the question. In the latter, beds are prepared not only for VIPs like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but also for Amy Winehouse, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Mischa Barton and Barbara Becker. However, in the Spree metropolis there are still some recommendable hotels that are in the center but not yet overbooked.

Just take Adele Designhotel in the trendy district Prenzlauer Berg. Only 14 bedrooms, all of them furnished in art deco style, are available here. The “Alex” or Alexanderplatz is in five minutes walking distance, if you do not prefer the busy Kollwitzplatz that you can also reach by foot in five minutes.

Hotel AdeleHotel Adele

Directly at the above mentioned “Alex”, there is the famous Park Inn Berlin, the former Forum Hotel, which was the flagship hotel of the GDR. It is the best place for people who want to enjoy a view over (almost) the entire town.

Park Inn BerlinPark Inn Berlin

1012 bedrooms and a height of 150 meters are superlatives even for Berlin. Needless to say, the Berlinale hotspots are fast and easy to reach from the Park Inn as well.

Finally, an insider’s tip for those who want piece and quiet, at least at night: the dignified ALMA Schlosshotel im Grunewald fits that purpose best.

ALMA Schlosshotel GrunewaldALMA Schlosshotel Grunewald

The thoroughly noble house offers an exclusive five-star atmosphere, a fantastic spa and an interior design by fashion czar Karl Lagerfeld himself. Of course, here the same applies as for the other hotels: both by public transport and by car you are in no time at the center of events of Berlinale.

Top 5 Palace Hotels in Europe

by Gesa Noormann February 9, 2010, 10:31 am

Why do we need Palace or Castle Hotels? Of course, to give our dreams the perfect setting and to make sure to have a sparkling bending of reality from time to time. Secretly we all cry when watching the Czech fairytale Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella (or even worse, when watching Sissi), although after Arnold Retzer’s pamphlet “Lob der Vernunftehe” we definitely wanted to say goodbye to the unrealistic image of the knight in shining armour on a white horse. After all, Valentine’s Day is approaching fast and it is now high time for romance – here are our top 5 Palace Hotels:

1) Hotel Château Grattequina, France

The Hotel Château Grattequina is the epitome of the French Schlosshotel: situated on the banks of the Garonne River outside the city of Bordeaux, this 4 star hotel dated from the year 1872 is fantastically located right in one of the most famous wine-producing regions in the world. Completely renovated in 2004, it nowadays depicts a perfect symbiosis of elegant furnishings with exquisite antiques and modern technology. In particular romantic is the junior suite with a chimney and an ultra-large plasma screen.

2) Château de la Couronne, France

This small Schlosshotel is located in Aquitaine, at the foot of the village Marthon. The classic brickwork with its honey-coloured towers takes us by surprise with its inside state-of-the-art design: the five lavish suites with its stylish mix of classic French design and natural materials are extremely nice to look at. This small, exquisite boutique hotel should therefore also score with the cool version of the modern princess.

Hotel Château GrattequinaChâteau de la Couronne

3) Alma Schlosshotel im Grunewald, Germany

No less a figure than designer prince Karl Lagerfeld has equipped this luxury Schlosshotel in fancy Berlin Grunewald. Fifty historically furnished rooms and suites are characterized by his skilful signature and exude a noble, cosy atmosphere. An English-seeming bar and an excellent restaurant also attract Berliners to this unusual hotel. And the German national football team, which resided there in 2006 during the World Cup, was reportedly downright pleased there too.

4) Pousada de Estremoz Rainha Santa Isabel, Portugal

This historic country house in Portugal is characterized by a spectacular location in the center of the Estremoz Castle. This magnificent palace, which once King Diniz had constructed for his wife, Queen Santa Isabel, has been carefully modernized and converted into a noble Schlosshotel. The interior is dominated by antique furniture and heavy fabrics, which are in complete harmony with the historic masonry. Princess Isabel got married here in 1490 – why don’t you just do the same!

5) Glenapp Castle, Scotland

Of course, a Scottish Castle should not be missed out in our Top 5 – and the Glenapp is truly a magnificent specimen of a castle! Situated near the fishermen’s village of Ballantrae, this luxury hotel is not only surrounded by superb gardens with Victorian greenhouses, but also offers a terrific view on the Irish Sea. In its 17 elegant suites with period furniture, precious carpets and fabrics, it is so comfortable that it doesn’t matter if it is storming and haunting outside.
