Top 5 Palace Hotels in Europe

by Gesa Noormann February 9, 2010, 10:31 am

Why do we need Palace or Castle Hotels? Of course, to give our dreams the perfect setting and to make sure to have a sparkling bending of reality from time to time. Secretly we all cry when watching the Czech fairytale Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella (or even worse, when watching Sissi), although after Arnold Retzer’s pamphlet “Lob der Vernunftehe” we definitely wanted to say goodbye to the unrealistic image of the knight in shining armour on a white horse. After all, Valentine’s Day is approaching fast and it is now high time for romance – here are our top 5 Palace Hotels:

1) Hotel Château Grattequina, France

The Hotel Château Grattequina is the epitome of the French Schlosshotel: situated on the banks of the Garonne River outside the city of Bordeaux, this 4 star hotel dated from the year 1872 is fantastically located right in one of the most famous wine-producing regions in the world. Completely renovated in 2004, it nowadays depicts a perfect symbiosis of elegant furnishings with exquisite antiques and modern technology. In particular romantic is the junior suite with a chimney and an ultra-large plasma screen.

2) Château de la Couronne, France

This small Schlosshotel is located in Aquitaine, at the foot of the village Marthon. The classic brickwork with its honey-coloured towers takes us by surprise with its inside state-of-the-art design: the five lavish suites with its stylish mix of classic French design and natural materials are extremely nice to look at. This small, exquisite boutique hotel should therefore also score with the cool version of the modern princess.

3) Alma Schlosshotel im Grunewald, Germany

No less a figure than designer prince Karl Lagerfeld has equipped this luxury Schlosshotel in fancy Berlin Grunewald. Fifty historically furnished rooms and suites are characterized by his skilful signature and exude a noble, cosy atmosphere. An English-seeming bar and an excellent restaurant also attract Berliners to this unusual hotel. And the German national football team, which resided there in 2006 during the World Cup, was reportedly downright pleased there too.

4) Pousada de Estremoz Rainha Santa Isabel, Portugal

This historic country house in Portugal is characterized by a spectacular location in the center of the Estremoz Castle. This magnificent palace, which once King Diniz had constructed for his wife, Queen Santa Isabel, has been carefully modernized and converted into a noble Schlosshotel. The interior is dominated by antique furniture and heavy fabrics, which are in complete harmony with the historic masonry. Princess Isabel got married here in 1490 – why don’t you just do the same!

5) Glenapp Castle, Scotland

Of course, a Scottish Castle should not be missed out in our Top 5 – and the Glenapp is truly a magnificent specimen of a castle! Situated near the fishermen’s village of Ballantrae, this luxury hotel is not only surrounded by superb gardens with Victorian greenhouses, but also offers a terrific view on the Irish Sea. In its 17 elegant suites with period furniture, precious carpets and fabrics, it is so comfortable that it doesn’t matter if it is storming and haunting outside.

Valentine’s Day: The Best Gift Ideas

by Sonja Franke January 29, 2010, 5:54 pm

The 14th February is creeping up on us again: Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and with it the challenge of giving a thoughtful and original something to your loved one. A present which should represent love, affection and passion and not awkwardness and lack of creativity.

Escapio Gift VoucherHappy V-Day!

I find particularly romantic, Valentine’s Day presents which awaken the anticipation of an extraordinary, mutual experience – a pleasant, relishing element in times where love is, above all, associated with “relationship work”. As specialists for romantic weekends, the Escapio team recommends our hand-crafted gift voucher. You can determine the value yourself and perhaps the loved one receiving the voucher could also decide on one of our many choices of Escapio’s romantic hotels. Or you can be inspired from one of our Top 10 romantic Valentine’s Day hotels.

Hotel Atelier sul Mare Ca Maria Adele Venedig
You could expect a passionate evening on Valentine’s in the Ellington Hotel. Here, the lovebirds could treat themselves to a four-course meal. In between meals, Germany’s erotic voice, Irina von Bentheim (who has her own column in the Escapio blog), will be reading out of Gloria Vanderbildt’s novel “The Queen Bee” (Die Bienenkönigin). I could warmly recommend that, as the cuisine at the Duke restaurant is as fantastic as Irina’s voice!

Whoever would prefer a tangible gift, but has not yet got any concrete ideas, should consult the DaWanda-Gift Finder. In DaWanda you will not only find great tips for gifts, but also original, home made gifts which you can order directly. Likewise, Edelight also offers a choice of great gift ideas for Valentine’s Day – Just click on and let yourself be inspired!

City of Love & Small Hotels Paris

by Justyna Piepiorka January 15, 2010, 2:08 pm

Why and when Paris was declared as the City of Love can today no longer be exactly clarified. Perhaps you should just feel it. A stroll along the Seine is the best opportunity to do so. The river bank of the Seine has a magical attraction to lovers. From here you can overlook many of the city’s major sights; from the Notre Dame to the Eiffel Tower… Probably it’s just the magic of this ancient city with its massive monuments, charming little cafes, alleys and small Paris hotels which fascinates us.

Small Hotels Paris are easy to find. In the French capital there are charming hotels in all price ranges. And one thing is certain: for a romantic dream holiday for two, they are just perfect.

There are of course very special hotels in Paris, where every stay becomes a special experience. However, such special hotels are also often wonderfully centrally located. Recommendable, for example, is Hôtel Britannique, surprising you with its typical Parisian town-house facade and beautiful decorations in the English country home style… or Hotel Le Lavoisier with rooms that make you feel like you’re in own four walls from the first moment on.
Hotel Britannique Hotel le Lavoisier
If you visit Paris and its small hotels, you will enjoy your whole stay for sure – and as there is also a lot to see and experience in Paris you may combine romantic walks with sightiseeing tours across the city.

From the most famous of all museums, the Louvre, through to the impressive Cathedral of Notre Dame, which you should definitely visit. Also worthwhile is a glimpse on the exterior façade: to the Gargoyles, legendary figures from European mythology, which are to protect the church from harm.

The Bois de Bologne is absolutely one of the biggest parks. There you can stay for hours, just walking around – it is beautiful just everywhere. Absolutely no one should miss a visit of the artists’ quarter, the Latin Quarter, where many famous artists like Picasso and Monet once worked and lived.

Want more small hotels Paris? You’ll find the perfect one with us for sure…

SemperOperaball & Dresden Hotels

by Justyna Piepiorka January 14, 2010, 1:35 pm

On the 15th January 2010 for the fifth time the SemperOperaball will take place in Dresden. The ball hasn’t been celebrated for 67 years and had its revival in 2006. Since then the ball established itself as an important place-to-be within Germany’s calendar of events and attracts many important visitors from politics, sports and television each year. As every year, also this time the „SemperOperaball’s Dresden Medal of St George“ will be awarded to outstanding personalities from culture, politics and sports and it will be interesting to see if this year’s awarding will be as controversial as last year when Wladimir Putin has been awarded with the medal – nevertheless, despite criticism it generated a lot of media hype.

Maybe more touching than the awarding of important personalities is this year’s motto of the SemperOperaball: „Great Couples“. Until the beginning of January couples were able to apply with an especially romantic or extraordinary story… On the 15th the winners – ten couples – will take part in the opening dance and are invited to celebrate this classical night.

Nobody will be disappointed to hear (especially a day before), that the ball is already sold out. But feel free to make plans for the next year, or – even better – celebrate with thousands of people on the Theatre Square in front of the Semperopera!

Of course, the perfect Dresden Hotel you’ll find with us…

Steigenberger Hotel de Saxe Dresden: The best way to prepare yourself for the ball is to enjoy the amazing view! Romantik Hotel & Restaurant Pattis: This romantic hotel consists of a group of buildings right in the middle of a park a few minutes outside downtown Dresden. Already with the aperitif, you will see that a dinner at this 5 star luxury hotel is something special. You can enjoy a drink to tantalize your appetite in the library by the crackling fire, in the rose garden out in the fresh air or at the bar. Enjoy the ball in a relaxed mood…
