Top 10 gay-friendly hotels

by Holly Maguire August 18, 2009, 10:32 am

Black, white, straight or gay, here’s a pick of our ultra-modern hotels with an open-minded and laid back atmosphere and often in the juiciest city districts and lusty green countryside getaways. More gay friendly hotels in Europe and beyond at Escapio.com.

1. Axel Hotel, Barcelona, Spain: Lap up personal style advice in the hotel’s own chic boutique, then enjoy zingy cocktails in the sky bar and a night out in the surrounding gay district Eixample. Sister Axel hotel in Berlin!

2. Zanzibar International Hotel, Sussex, England: Egypt, India, Morocco, Manhattan, be whisked around the world in this innovative luxury B&B in Hastings, Sussex. The themed suites have squeaky clean designer bathrooms and sumptuous sea views.

3. Hotel Magnolia, Salou, Spain: just past Sitges down the Catalonian coast, this chilled out design hotel is a haven for couples of any orientation, with three gay clubs in the vicinity.

4. Palacio de los Navas Hotel, Granada, Spain: This cute little hotel was originally a 16th century palace, and is in a fab flirting location not far from Calle Elvira, jammed with lively tapas bars; and Granada 10, a fabulous old cinema converted into a popular discoteca.

5. Palazzo Gattini, Basilicata, Italy: breathtaking luxury hotel with stunning views and just 20 rooms for the ultimate intimate moments. Excellent cuisine and a suite with private terrace and pool.

6. Feldmilla.designhotel, South Tyrol, Italy: Distinctive design hotel in the midst of nature, breaking away from the traditional chalet-style mountain hotels. Perfect for active types who want to lounge around in true style after a day hiking, climbing or biking.

7. Classical 2, Fashion House Hotel, Athens, Greece: Fresh, hip and really rather camp, the kitschy décor conceived by Greek designers and stylists claims to be a “crime scene for fashion victims”. The eclectic mix of classic furniture pieces and post-modern furnishings are ideal for five star luxury lovers craving that extra something in the heart of Athens.

8. Hotel Otto, Berlin, Germany: Near the colourful gay district Schöneberg, a stylish and good value abode to retire to after a spontaneous night. And, even if you don’t get to bed, the Etage07 breakfast restaurant invites to a irresistible morning-after-the-night-before feast of organic produce on the roof terrace.

9. Hotel Cocoon, Munich, Germany: This clean-cut designer hotel will appeal to trendy professionals in the Bavarian capital – for work or for pleasure. Curvaceous plastic seating and striking colours provide a bright backdrop for metrosexual suited and booted types having an after work drink, or curious guests out to experience the Glockenbachviertel’s lively offerings.

10. Room Mate Grace, New York, United States: Hotly styled rooms with all the mod-cons, and a 24 hour kiosk to suit guests returning at any earthly hour. This youthful hotel is colourful and fun, and promises groovy ‘alternative’ in-house events… in an enviable Times Square location.

Barcelona dreams and boutique hotels with flair

by Holly Maguire April 14, 2009, 10:27 am

Barcelona is the ultimate city for a short break at any time of year. I’ve been in the heat of summer, soaked up the atmosphere of the Christmas markets and ventured out of the Catalonian city to the picturesque mountain town of Vic as well as revelling in the Carnival craziness in Sitges, a classic gay beach hangout.

Montjuic

For Easter Egg hunts, Parc Guell is the obvious choice, but to get away from the tourists, Montjuïc is a great inner city retreat. This is where the Olympic stadium sits high above Plaça d’Espanya and with fabulous views across the whole city, making for a great afternoon strolling through tropical gardens. Stay until the evening to have a picnic and sangria-fuelled Botellón on the steps, enjoying the Font Màgica – a stunning display of bubbling fountains, striking lighting and music.

Passeig de Gracia is a wide avenue branching off from Plaza Cataluña. Stay in the sleek design hotel Prestige, or, if you like to indulge, the luxury Hotel Majestic with its art nouveau balconies and rooftop pool is another great option. Drop off your shopping bags stuffed with unique wares from Desigual and the likes before hitting the town for a fantastic slap up meal or a boogying the night away.

If you’re done with bocadillos and tapas and craving the exotic flavours of lands afar, grab a bite to eat in the Asian restaurant of Murmuri Hotel. If you fancy a good beer to wash down your meal (and you’re not perturbed by the potential indigestion brought on by unlikely food & beverage combinations), make the Oveja Negra, tucked away in the Barrio Gótico, your next stop. Wherever you end up, the excellent night buses will get you home to any of the Barcelona hotels you’re staying in – ¡que te disfrutes!

Heterofriendly fun at Axel Hotel Berlin opening party!

by Holly Maguire March 18, 2009, 9:36 am

Thank to the unfortunate post-ITB wave of bacteria that swallowed up half my colleagues yesterday, I received a last minute invitation to the opening bash of the spanking new “heterofriendly” Axel Hotel Berlin. After throwing on a safe combination of black fabrics and adding some spice with dangerous heels, my colleague Ana and I travelled across Berlin to the new hotel’s fabulous location in Schöneberg, just minutes from the KaDeWe shopping paradise and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche as well as countless gay clubs and bars.

Axel Hotel Berlin will soon be added to our suberb collection of gay friendly hotels. Sister (or sibling is likely deemed more politically correct in the circumstances) hotel Axel Barcelona opened in 2003 in the enviable location of the gothic quarter just a stones throw from Las Ramblas and last night showed the new German hotel promises to maintain to the hotspot buzz of its Barcelonian counterpart.

The restaurant area was packed with various associates, media, would-be celebs and far too many attractive men who sadly swing in the opposite direction from me, all enjoying the colourful atmosphere, feel good music and generous flow of drinks.

Half-naked waiters with smooth Rocky Horror-style bodies entertained as they topped up everyone’s flutes from enormous magnums of Veuve Clicquot champagne. The creative canapés included German-influenced takes on classics – pumpernickel bread adding deutschness to the goats cheese and caramelised onion bites; and a hilarious currywurst and pommes bitesize portioned delight, presented on a tray zig-zagged with ketchup and mayo – fabulous, and very Berlin!!

And for anyone whose choice dish just isnt a late night currywurst, we’ve got plenty of other design, luxury and arty hotels in berlin to suit all tastes and orientations!
