Bread & Butter Berlin: Fashion Show 2010 in Tempelhof

by Holly Maguire January 19, 2010, 9:53 am

After several years in exile, the Bread & Butter fashion show made a welcome return to Berlin last year. The 2010 winter shows take place in the former airport Tempelhof from 20th to 22nd January – this year with a Country theme. Opening the show are Berlin country rock cover band The Boss Hoss, who have enjoyed moderate success with unusual interpretations of country songs. The fashion halls in hangars and on the runway are fully booked and will play host to the 2011/12 season’s streetwear collections from designers including Diesel, Boss Orange, Lacoste, Levi’s and G-Star. According to Bread & Butter’s director Karl-Heinz Müller, the fashion show will be more successful than ever – despite the financial crisis. “The exhibitors’ interests remain unchanged,” says M…üller in an interview with Fashion-Community Styleranking. “Bread & Butter is the leading platform for street and urban wear in Europe, if not worldwide.”

The event’s networking hotspot is the Original Sin Saloon with it’s western-style atmosphere. With live music every night, there is an emphasis on meet and greet in the restaurant where guests can pull on a pair of old Levi’s and cool-again cowboy boots to fit in with the running theme.

Paris & Coco: Style is sexy

by Christin Papenfuss August 14, 2009, 9:55 am

Today the long awaited Chanel movie “Coco before Chanelis coming into theatres. And I’m really looking forward to seeing it. Without too much publicity and fanfares it starts up – I think even that is style! Now I’m contemplating how I can coax my boyfriend into coming with me. Even now I’ve got the feeling I have to wear the little black dress while watching it. Maybe that’s the trick? The perfect dress and a cigar instead of coke and popcorn? That could be my way of smuggling the flair of this style icon into the sulky plush seats! Plus boyfriend, of course.

I can just imagine: Paris, the city of love, Coco, the eternal and long-suffering lover. Her style subtle and understatement which defines the sex appeal of thousands of women all over the world. Her life, a romantic tragic chaos of feelings in a city shimmering with Montmartre, Louvre and the Champs-Elysees. A life of style and fashion – very sexy! Women topics – great!

Who was she and what was her inspiration? All I know is where I would love to stay if I were Coco Chanel! A quick look into our Paris portfolio… Here: Enjoying a small aperitif in the courtyard of the romantic Hotel Le Quartier Bastille, Le Faubourg and crossing my legs over like her (of course in that little black dress)… or here: Sitting on the terrace of 4 star Terrass Hotel with a stunning view over Paris and having important meetings with important people wearing a touch of Chanel N°5.

Just imagining this – very inspiring! Now the decision is made: a pearl necklace as a gift from my boyfriend and then watching the movie! For the next vacation Paris for sure is on my agenda…

Berlin Fashion Week: Unrath & Strano in Ellington Hotel

by Gesa Noormann June 30, 2009, 8:20 am

The Ellington Hotel Berlin is the latest hotspot for the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Berlin. The boutique hotel could indeed be hosting one of the highlights of the fashion week, with design duo Klaus Unrath und Ivan Strano presenting their first Couture Bridal Collection on 2nd July.

“The number of couples saying ‘yes’ in church-free weddings has risen steadily in recent years, and along with it, the demand for unusual wedding dresses,” explains Klaus Unrath. “We want to create young, eccentric designs which break away from traditional bridal wear.”

Alongside the Unrath und Strano show many other glamorous events are taking place in the Ellington. Stars from “Germany’s Next Topmodels” will be strutting their stuff on 1st July (Escapio will be present and reporting!). The Duke restaurant team will be catering for the Guido Maria Kretschmar show at Gendarmenmarkt on 1st July in the Karlsson Loft.

It’s VIP time again on the 4th with the star-studded GALA Fashion Brunch, though sadly its an invitation only event… though if you’re lucky you might spy a few celebs slinking around Nürnberger Straße into the side entrance!

Nightlife Berlin: The best insider tips

by Gesa Noormann June 19, 2009, 2:43 pm

Aside from having the most fabulous Hotels in Berlin , Escapio also has the insider connections to the hoteliers who know the very best nightspots and places to be seen in the city. Today Dominic Hofer, Senior Sales Manager of Berlin Arcotels and Berlin scene socialite has let us in on his top tips for going out.

Dominic HoferARCOTEL Velvet

Anyone not lucky enough to live in Berlin will just have to enjoy a hot spicy weekend in Germany’s most exciting city – staying in one of the fantastic Arcotels, of course. The choice is all yours -Arcotel Velvet on Oranienburger Straße, slap bang in cultural Mitte, or the brand new Arcotel John F right next to the Foreign Office building with panoramic views.

Here are Dominic’s top Tipps for Berlin nightlife!

1) Weinerei: The Weinerei is a great place to enjoy wine tasting and food. The interior design and furniture is a classic Berlin living room, with features from every decade since the 20s. Every day seasonal delights float out of the kitchen, and the bar offers two wines from the house vineyard, and a wine menu that changes monthly. Slap in the middle of Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg on Veteranenstraße, this is the perfect place to kick off a Berlin bar crawl.

2) Bar 25: From Glorious Friday to Pirate festival, this fab location on the river opposite Ostbahnhof is a top spot for cool partygoers. The “off-road” cuisine peps up flagging dancers and keeps them going throughout the night.

3) Spindler und Klatt: A groovy restaurant (delicious fusion cuisine) and club in a huge old Kreuzberg industry warehouse on the Spree river. In summer guests flood out into the open air lounge overlooking the water. Much-loved amongst fashion scene regulars (and a great spot for Bread & Butter fashion week afterparties).

4) Club der Visionäre: Bar in hippest party quarter of the moment near Schlesisches Tor. Especially cool in summer, chilling and munching pizza on the wooden decking on the canal.

5) Horst Krzbrg: Secret clubbing Tipp on the Tempelhofer Ufer in Kreuzberg. The playlist here will appeal to discerning disco fans of any genre- from slo-mo prog rave to robomanic cosmo disco… get down on it!

Cannes Festival 2009: celebrity catwalk

by Gesa Noormann May 19, 2009, 9:32 am

Tiara YakstaChateau de la Chevre dor

This year’s Cannes Film Festival will glimmer on until 24 May. International stars are expected as every year, including silver-fox legends like Clint Eastwood (in the spotlight with recognition of his life work) and Martin Scorsese whose film The Red Shoes will be screened as a Cannes classic.

Founded before World War 2, the festival only won international acclaim in 1968 when top French directors demonstrated their support for the student and workers revolution. Louis Malle stept down from the film jury and together with François Truffaut, Claude Berri, Jean-Gabriel Albicocco, Claude Lelouch, Roman Polanski and Jean-Luc Godard, called for the public to boycott the event.

Such political involvement seems unimaginable today, aside from stars showing their preferences for enigmatic presidents like Barack Obama. Aside from the films, the celebrities’ red carpet wardrobes are the biggest topic of conversation. President of the jury Isabelle Huppert, one of the first ladies of French cinema, dazzled in an elaborate Armani gown, whilst jury member Robin Wright Penn shimmered in a dreamy silver Louis Vuitton robe. Check out all the stars’ enchanting and flabbergasting wares and vote for your favourite look at Elle.de.

In the French Riviera Hotels the glamour doesn’t stop when the stars leave town. 3.14 Hotel emits the sleek, glamorous aura of the Côte d’Azur all year round. Worldwide celebrities (Hollywood icons such as Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich -,  international movie industry, TV & Music industry, authors, fashion icons…) and wealthy industrials have been regularly coming to Château de la Chèvre d’Or since its opening in 1956 to enjoy its calm and ultimate privacy. Recently,  Demi Moores husband Ashton Kutcher said on Twitter, that that “Chevre d’or may be the best restuarant in the south of France”. Perhaps he will be back soon….

Any sensible star checks into a hotel as close as possible to the film festival’s theatre. Anyone looking for something a little more secluded should opt for the opulent 5 star Tiara Yaktsa Theoule-sur-Mer, one of the most fabulous Mediterranean hotel pearls.

Florence: The best shopping tips

by Pia Peilert May 14, 2009, 3:51 pm

Typical TuscanyCulture and Shopping

The capital of Tuscany is also known as „ La Bella“ and that with reason, because Florence is so wonderfully nestled into the rolling hills and the centre of art and culture. Just after the culture, so close on the second spot is the incredible shopping pleasure in Florence. Nobody should miss a stroll through all those different shops, from clothes over jewellery, antiquities to typical groceries, all is buyable in Florence. After an exhausting shopping tour we relax in one of the beautiful hotels of Florence. What about the Hotel Roma, it is located in the heart of the historic centre of Florence and offers an amazing views over the Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. The main attractions are easy reached by foot, that makes the return to the hotel, an ancient city palest form the 17th century, more than easy. Who prefers to live more quietly and takes a little drive instead, whom suites the Hotel Villa Fiesole. The elegant Boutique Hotel is not just a good base for sightseeing; it is also a beautiful place to spend holidays or a honeymoon trip.

Everyone in Florence has the agony of choice, but the best cloth shops are situated in the Via die Tornabuoni. All famous brands, like Armani, Gucci or Versace are represented. Who still wants more can stroll further on and dive into the fashion world in the Via della Vigna Nuova. The former handcraft centre still offers a lot of jewellery workshops, in which you can buy beautiful pieces. If you leave the Ponte Vecchio, you can find at the Via Maggio all around the antiquity market.

Also not to miss are the markets, which make Florence to a happy and lively city. On the markets you can find what your heart desires. Here is for example the Mercato di San Lorenzo, he is based in the old city and a main attraction for tourists. There is leatherwear, clothes and souvenirs to look at.  If you like it more historical, you should visit the market Piazza del Mercato Nuovo, it is the ideal place to dive into the Italian history. He is situated under the Loggia del Porcellino in a building of the 16th century. The statue in front of this building is worth to get touched, because a folkway says; everyone who touches the pigs belly falls in love with Florence and will always come back. There is also more then one grocery market like den Mercato Central or the  Mercato di Sant’ Ambrogio.

A great page in the internet is the tourist guide „aboutflorence“, it gives important information about the city and a favourable site to book hotels is the booking portal Escapio!
Very important is to keep an eye on the opening hours of all shops and markets, so you never experience to stand in front of locked doors. But that is the only thing which could block you a great shopping day in Florence!
Now get yourself started!

A Scandinavian spring weekend in Malmö and Copenhagen

by Holly Maguire March 30, 2009, 1:24 pm

Costal ViewsFresh Swedish Breeze

I’ve just spent a fleeting weekend soaking up Scandinavian culture, breathing in the fresh coastal air and indulging in culinary delights, seeing the little Swedish city of Malmö by the ultimate mode of transport – bicycle (and a tandem at that!).

Malmö is four hours from Stockholm and is actually closer to Milan in Italy than Sweden’s northernmost town! However, its just a short train ride across the stunning Oresund bridge with spectacular coastal views, from the Danish capital Copenhagen and the international Kastrup airport. This environmentally friendly metropolis is a calm haven of exemplary architecture and chic eateries wrapped up in the warm Swedish hospitality and an omnipresent gentle sea breeze.

The calm seafront location guarantees plenty of fresh seafood, and the creative cuisine and international influences guarantee a whetted appetite. Typical Swedish specialities like herring (and liquorice – manifesting itself in a scrumptious ice cream sauce) are given modern twists with divine presentation and recommendations for accompanying beers in the atmospheric Tempo Bar & Kök, which even respected Earth Hour on Saturday night by discretely lighting candles and dimming the Swedish design lights. Malmö has over 600 restaurants, all infused with worldwide flavours from Japanese to Spanish, like the excellent lively tapas restaurant La Roche situated just by the buzzing Lilla Torg square.

Hotel FrontHotel Kong Arthur

Copenhagen is just 20 minutes away across the bridge – perfect for a day out shopping or a musical evening at the famous Jazz House, where Yu Jun, a lovely lady I met on the plane over from Berlin, happened to be playing on Saturday night! Of course, Malmö is also just a 20 minute train ride from Copenhagen, and if you prefer to stay in the Danish city, check into Hotel Kong Arthur or Hotel Front , in a prime location opposite the opera house.

So for anyone wanting a quick-fix short haul spring break, Copenhagen and southern Sweden are are thoroughly recommended for a refreshing weekend away!
