Small Hotels Hamburg – Port City and Metropolis

by Sonja Franke March 15, 2010, 11:37 am

Hamburg can without doubt be called one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. It’s the unique atmosphere of the Port of Hamburg – with its numerous freighters and from time to time even a luxury liner – which make this city special. You can put yourself at best in the bustling life there in the “Hamburger Fischmarkt”. And of course you have to eat one or the other fish sandwich there, for nowhere fish and seafood tastes better than freshly caught from the North Sea.

A harbour tour should not be missed out and neither a tour of the warehouse district. When this “Speicherstadt” was built in the 19th Century, it was the largest connected warehouse complex ever. There are also very special museums: the “Deutsches Zollmuseum” (German Customs Museum) or the museum of spices “Hot Spice”, which focuses on the history of Hamburg’s “Pfeffersäcke” or “Moneybags”, as the wealthy merchants were named.

Those looking for a beautiful hotel in Hamburg should perhaps stick to city center, as from there the sights can me reached fastest. But to get the real “Hamburg feeling” you should definitely stay in a small Hamburg hotel.

My Place My Place

There is, for example, the charming My Place Hotel: Some of the 18 rooms have a rooftop terrace others an idyllic terrace facing the inner courtyard. For those of you who are looking for a little more luxurious hotel we recommend the Hotel Abtei. Here you’ll stay in Harvestehude, one of Hamburg’s most luxurious districts, enjoying one of the 11 rooms of this 5 star boutique hotel within walking distance of the Alster lake.

Hotel Abtei Hotel Abtei
Whether it’s the tasty and fresh food or a glimpse in the artistic life (for exmaple: “Hamburger Kunsthalle” art gallery where you can find paintings of Edward Munch, Manet, Caspar David Friedrich) – this romantic Hamburg, small hotels and the view of the Alster makes your short trip an unforgettable city break.

Easter traditions & the perfect hotel

by Sonja Franke March 8, 2010, 6:17 pm

Let us put Easter bunnies and Easter eggs aside when talking about Easter traditions – both have the significant drawback of living nowhere, thus you cannot do a journey under this motto.

In other countries, that is completely different. Just take Great Britain. On the continent, the Brits are believed to cultivate strange customs anyway, and the habit of patting each other with willow catkins at Eastern is only one of those.

More interesting is Pankake Thursday in the little town Olney, a festivity taking place on Holy Thursday for more than 500 years.  Olney is near Milton Keynes and so you can reach it comfortably from London. There are plenty of London hotels, but the Number Sixteen Hotel is particularly romantic.

Number Sixteen Hotel Number Sixteen Hotel

The hotel is not far situated from the popular trendy districts, but in a green environment. Five-star luxuries meet a pleasant retro atmosphere. Even a private garden is not missing in the 42-bedroom house. The perfect place for a perfect egg hunt!

Great Britain is too cold for you? Then go to Andalusia, where the metropolis Sevilla has a truly bombastic Easter tradition.  Not only is the city the home of the tomb of discoverer Christopher Columbus, it also features the largest gothic cathedral in the world. When the Easter procession with the famous masked “hermandades” takes place, the atmosphere is hard to top. The “Semana Santa”, in English “holy week”, is from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, and on every day there are some special events somewhere.

Before I forget it: you need an accomodation! How about the Hotel Petit Palace Canalejas, a brandnew building in the middle of the town center. The furnishing is modern and the technical facilities are state-of-the-art, yet it is not an expensive luxury hotel. The hotel was opened in 2008, and it is a member of the so called High Tech Hotels group. You’ll definitely have a stylish Easter here…

You do not care about foreign costums and insist on your Easter egg? Then Switzerland should be the holiday resort of your choice. In the capital Bern on Easter Sunday people use to play “Eiertütscha” (egg bumping). The person who has the most robust Easter egg wins.

The Switzerland hotels are traditonally of high quality; as an example, the Hotel Allegro shall be mentioned. The special thing about that hotel is the spectacular view on the historic city, and from every window you can see the Alps as well. Given the 171 bedrooms, it is no surprise that the hotel offers every convenience – there was even room for a casino in the building. So let the easter bunny be your lucky charm!

Ooh, la la! Anyone craving a touch of glamorous France – city chic or a Riviera retreat – our Paris and Cote d’Azur design and boutique hotels are sure to satisfy.

The south of France bathes in year round sunshine – why not escape to the glittering Cote d’Azur and lap up the luxury in the Villa Belrose at a fraction of the normal price? This exclusive villa is a sanctuary for relaxation and gourmet delights with food served by Michelin starred chef Thierry Thiercelin. Why not check out the opening of the Chateau de la Moutte on 3rd April, the Spring Sailing Regatta on 10 and 11 April or a multitude of art exhibitions.

The gorgeous romantic boutique hotel La Perouse in Nice is set back from the road with stunning views of across Nice’s beach, old town and the Mediterranean is another picturesque stop off if you fancy driving along the coast.

Hotel Recamier, ParisLa Perouse in Nice

Paris is as magical in April as the rest of the year, and Easter is perfect for travelling with children – hunt down those Easter eggs (Grande Chase aux Oeufs) in Galeries Lafayette or Vaux le Vicomte castle just outside the city.

These three small, but perfectly formed France hotels: Hotel Therese (01. Louvre – Châtelet), Clos Medicis Hotel and Hotel Recamier (both 06. Saint Germain – Luxembourg) are all awaiting your Easter weekend reservation…

Berlinale Hotels: Where the stars were seen

by Gesa Noormann February 23, 2010, 10:39 am

Even if the news magazine Focus slanders the lack of stars or the bad temper of the attending VIPs: The 60th Berlinale lured numerous international figures to Berlin, and in many Berliner Hotels fans could admire their stars more or less tightly. As always, the most star-studded venue was the Grand Hyatt Hotel, for here lies the red carpet for the press conferences in front of the door. Nicolas Cage was there, Kate Winslet, Til Schweiger, Armin Mueller-Stahl and Madonna – who is known as being picky – even finished her plate of sushi. Allegedly, the fans almost came to blows in front of the door. According to the Berliner Morgenpost, the press photographers lingered first and foremost on the hotel roof of the 5 star spa at the Hyatt, because from here, they probably had the best view on the Berlinale stars.

Hotel de RomeRoof terrace of Grand Hyatt
According to Gala, Leonardo di Caprio, with mother Irmelin in tow (family is obviously the trend: Pierce Brosnan also took his mother out to the Berlinale), preferred dining with friends in the Grill Royal than to show himself to the fans. And instead of going to the opening party of his own movie “Shutter Iceland”, he preferred to celebrate Valentine’s Day with his girlfriend Bar Refaeli at the bar of the Hotel de Rome. The opening party was held on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Berlinale at Café Moscow, the legendary restoration in East Berlin. Here, to the cool retro atmosphere of socialist chic many stars and starlets moved in the evening, among them mainly German actors and producers such as Armin Rohde, Jürgen Prochnow, Katja Riemann and Hannelore Elsner. Of course, the ubiquitous party-mayor Klaus Wowereit, and Claudia Roth from the Greens, who is inevitable at such events could not be absent.

Angry words about Berlinale chief Dieter Kosslick or not: The Berlin hotels were fully booked as never before, and the ticket record from last year (275,000 entry tickets sold) has been probably topped again. And so many international stars at a time you meet in Germany only at the Berlinale.

Never Again a Side Table: The Best City Hotels for Singles

by Gesa Noormann February 22, 2010, 11:28 am

Valentine’s Day with its seemingly sugary interpretation of love is over and singles feel relieved: time to plan your next vacation. Are you one of the jinx, who mistakenly ended up in a family club complex last summer, or were surrounded by happy smiling couples and candlelight in the supposedly trendy restaurant? Then you have probably decided to spend the next short holiday in a cool, trendy design hotel, preferably in the metropolis. After all, the chances of finding nice interlocutors at the bar are much better here. And nobody dares to offer you the famous side table next to the kitchen…. Here are our top 5 city hotels for a single holiday:

Le General HotelThe Rockwell

1) The hotel roomz vienna is centrally located, close to all attractions and the nightlife of Vienna. This hotel has a modern design and an uncomplicated service concept. The restaurant and bar is open 24 hours and is also a hotspot for Viennese. The amazingly affordable room rates of this budget design hotel will bring you delight.

2) For Francophiles the best place to stay is the laid-back Hotel Le Général, which in one direction is only 500 meters away from the Georges Pompidou Center while in the other from the trendy quarters Bastille and Oberkampf. Franck, the extremely nice owner, has excellent knowledge about the Parisian night life.

3) In the young, hip design hotel The Rockwell in the beautiful district of Kensington the best shopping opportunities (Chelsea and Knightsbridge) are just around the corner. The innovative concept of this new 4 star hotel is characterized by a combination of tradition and modern design: traditional English style elements have been retained everywhere and in the restaurant there’s an English kitchen, however, with a modern interpretation.

4) The Casa Camper in Berlin’s trendy district Mitte is the first hotel under the flag of the trendy shoe label Camper. This new hotel is characterized by a modern, colourful design and an international audience. Individual shops, cafés and bars are within walking distance in the surrounding streets of Berlin, the capital for singles.

5) Also a metropolis for singles is New York. Recommended for an exciting short city holiday is here the hotel Room Mate Grace , kept in a young, hip design. Guests not only rent a room here: the concept of this creative, Spanish hotel chain is to provide a home and create space in a public area to establish contacts – tailor-made for singles!

Top 5 Berlin Sights

by Gesa Noormann February 18, 2010, 10:33 am

I’ve seldom had as many visitors as I get now that I live in Berlin. The German capital has become Europe’s number one hot spot. And for all of you who don’t have that friend in Berlin with an extra couch, Escapio offers you a selection of the best Berlin hotels, everything from hip to chic. Berlin’s mayor Klaus Wowereit’s now famous line about his city being „poor but sexy“ sums up this place quite succinctly. Indeed, Berlin tourists are particularly interested in experiencing that certain je ne sais quoi flair so unique to this once so divided city. Nowhere else visitors will find as many parties going on as here. New clubs, fashion labels and bands seem to burst onto the scene every day. And yet, perhaps the best song to reflect this particular Berlin mood is the ambivalent Peter Fox‘ anti-hymn hit Black to Blue“ with its telling line:„Good morning Berlin, sometimes you use to be so ugly.“

There are so many museums, exhibitions and monuments in Berlin that it’s very hard to know where best to start. And this is why we have put together our own selection of top 5 Berlin sights, just to jump-start that big city feeling for you.

1) Get things going with a simple bus ride. Take a city tour on the city’s own BVG bus line 100 from Zoologischen Garten to Alexanderplatz. The ticket will only set you back 2.10 euros for a ride that will take you all the way across town along sites that include a great look at the Tiergarten, Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and Hackescher Markt. And while you’re at it you can enjoy the innovative audio guide from Culture-to-Go. Berlin creative artists’ narratives turn this bus ride into an amusing and highly informative city tour.

2) Of all the Berlin museums, the Pergamon Museum is arguably the most impressive. Constructed between 1910 and 1930 on the city’s famous Museum Island (the island itself a sight worth seeing), it has attained world-wide fame primarily through the awe-inspiring reconstructions of three particularly famous ancient world structures – the colossal Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus and the stunning blue Ishtar Gate, with its accompanying Procession Road to Babylon and Mshatta Facade.

3) Taking in a concert at the Berlin Philharmonie is an absolute must for any music enthusiast who visits Berlin. And even if Sir Simon Rattle may not be conducting when you attend, this imposing concert hall always offers its listeners an unforgettable sound experience. Many concerts are booked out months in advance of course, but with a little luck you might get one of the tickets that were returned.

4) In order to get a true feel for the many-faceted and sometimes subtle differences between the long-divided eastern and western sides of the city, the best way to go is to take a closer look at two particularly representative districts: The elegant stores, cafes and restaurants located on streets near Charlottenburg’s Savignyplatz are perfect examples of the old West-Berlin culture. Berlin-Mitte in the east, on the other hand, is despite some overly zealous reconstruction work in places. An inviting district due to the large number of original structures built in the old Berliner building style still standing and the lively art and art gallery scene that has established itself there. Dozens of galleries have popped up along Auguststraße, Oranienburger Straße and Linienstraße. And directly in the hip Oranienburger Straße neighborhood is where you can find the chic design hotel Casa Camper where not just scene-insiders feel at home.

5) Prenzlauer Berg’s Kulturbrauerei offers a huge array of concerts, films and other cultural events. Assorted cafes and restaurants are housed directly in the old brewery complex, but nothing is stopping you from also stepping outside and taking a little walk along Kastanienallee and plunge yet a bit deeper into the another wild side of the bustling Berlin scene.

Berlinale: Stars on the red carpet

by Sonja Franke February 12, 2010, 10:03 am

Attentive readers of the Escapio weblog surely will have read the worthwhile article on Berlinale 2010. But as with every “gossip” topic, you never get tired of announcing the latest news.

So let us take stock – in the case of such a major event usually consisting of name-dropping. Which celebrities will attend? What will they wear? And above all: who is going to stay in which hotel?

A few of these world-shaking questions have already been answered, thus I would like to focus on the hotels in Berlin more suited to visitors than to stars and starlets.

So the celebrity hotspots Grand Hyatt Berlin, Hotel The Mandala and Hotel Q are out of the question. In the latter, beds are prepared not only for VIPs like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but also for Amy Winehouse, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Mischa Barton and Barbara Becker. However, in the Spree metropolis there are still some recommendable hotels that are in the center but not yet overbooked.

Just take Adele Designhotel in the trendy district Prenzlauer Berg. Only 14 bedrooms, all of them furnished in art deco style, are available here. The “Alex” or Alexanderplatz is in five minutes walking distance, if you do not prefer the busy Kollwitzplatz that you can also reach by foot in five minutes.

Hotel AdeleHotel Adele

Directly at the above mentioned “Alex”, there is the famous Park Inn Berlin, the former Forum Hotel, which was the flagship hotel of the GDR. It is the best place for people who want to enjoy a view over (almost) the entire town.

Park Inn BerlinPark Inn Berlin

1012 bedrooms and a height of 150 meters are superlatives even for Berlin. Needless to say, the Berlinale hotspots are fast and easy to reach from the Park Inn as well.

Finally, an insider’s tip for those who want piece and quiet, at least at night: the dignified ALMA Schlosshotel im Grunewald fits that purpose best.

ALMA Schlosshotel GrunewaldALMA Schlosshotel Grunewald

The thoroughly noble house offers an exclusive five-star atmosphere, a fantastic spa and an interior design by fashion czar Karl Lagerfeld himself. Of course, here the same applies as for the other hotels: both by public transport and by car you are in no time at the center of events of Berlinale.

Madrid – Spain’s Castilian pearl

by Sonja Franke February 5, 2010, 10:31 am

Without a doubt, one can say that Madrid is the metropolis of Spain. Everything revolves around a central point: the Royal Palace. It appeals downright pompous, housing not only the city palace, but also a cathedral and the Sabatini Gardens. The royal family, however, turns up there only at major festivals and is living most of the time north of Madrid at the Zarzuela Palace.

Nevertheless, there is a changing of guard at the Palacio Real, a spectacle similar to that in London, which is a must see.

Madrid is home to many wonderful hotels. In particular, Madrid small hotels are very popular among travellers. Many are located very centrally in the city centre and are extremely charming hotels.

Hotel AbaluBoutique Hotel Casa de Madrid

In Madrid, you should absolutely include visits to the numerous tapa restaurants. Utterly recommendable is the Cerveceria Alemania – Ernest Hemingway was already dining there. His then regular table is still particularly marked. But also the central located Cerverceria Santa Barbara is offering notably tasty appetizers and great Spanish wines.

And then there is of course, the Prado, one of the greatest museums in the world. Exceptionally impressive and worth seeing are the paintings of Goya, such as the famous “The Naked Maja”.

Position yourself for a moment on the vast Plaza Mayor. Surrounded by buildings which reflect thousands of years of history, you are witnessing at first hand the history but also the hustle and bustle of the Spanish capital. Then you will be looking forward to return to your beautiful hotel and totally relax.

But first you should enjoy the unique view of the sunset over the Plaza Mayor.
