by Gesa Noormann March 4, 2010, 1:30 pm

On March 11th, 2010, leading international travel bloggers will blog, tweet and share techniques and more at the PhoCusWright Bloggers Summit during ITB Berlin 2010 . Escapio will be part of it, and not only because ITB with our office based in Berlin-Kreuzberg is practically a home match for us (for those not living in Berlin Escapio naturally has suitable Berlin Hotels). A lot of well known faces will be taking part this year, like Guido van den Elshout of Happy Hotelier (one of the first and most engaging hotel bloggers) or Jens Oellrich of Tourismuszukunft. Escapio will report directly from the summit, here in the blog as well as on Twitter.

After the exclusive Bloggers Summit Town Hall with Philip Wolf, president and CEO of PhoCusWright, two insightful workshops about key trends in travel and the role of bloggers in the online travel economy will be moderated by Kevin May, editor of the international news portal for travel industry tnooz – talking travel tech (please read our Interview with Kevin May). The workshops will be guided by a panel of leading bloggers from around the world, like the already mentioned Guido van den Elshout or travel tech coach Detlef Mayer, director of Heritage Consult International.

Uwe Frers, founder and managing director of  Escapio will talk of his experience with Facebook and other social media during the second workshop “Brand Management, Fighting Fires and Finding Fans Through Social Media”. So those of you who will visit ITB can personally meet the brain behind Escapio- the workshops are open to all ITB attendees. Please find the full program  here. We are looking forward to sharing ideas on Bloggers Summit at ITB 2010!

Berlinale Hotels: Where the stars were seen

by Gesa Noormann February 23, 2010, 10:39 am

Even if the news magazine Focus slanders the lack of stars or the bad temper of the attending VIPs: The 60th Berlinale lured numerous international figures to Berlin, and in many Berliner Hotels fans could admire their stars more or less tightly. As always, the most star-studded venue was the Grand Hyatt Hotel, for here lies the red carpet for the press conferences in front of the door. Nicolas Cage was there, Kate Winslet, Til Schweiger, Armin Mueller-Stahl and Madonna – who is known as being picky – even finished her plate of sushi. Allegedly, the fans almost came to blows in front of the door. According to the Berliner Morgenpost, the press photographers lingered first and foremost on the hotel roof of the 5 star spa at the Hyatt, because from here, they probably had the best view on the Berlinale stars.

Hotel de RomeRoof terrace of Grand Hyatt
According to Gala, Leonardo di Caprio, with mother Irmelin in tow (family is obviously the trend: Pierce Brosnan also took his mother out to the Berlinale), preferred dining with friends in the Grill Royal than to show himself to the fans. And instead of going to the opening party of his own movie “Shutter Iceland”, he preferred to celebrate Valentine’s Day with his girlfriend Bar Refaeli at the bar of the Hotel de Rome. The opening party was held on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Berlinale at Café Moscow, the legendary restoration in East Berlin. Here, to the cool retro atmosphere of socialist chic many stars and starlets moved in the evening, among them mainly German actors and producers such as Armin Rohde, Jürgen Prochnow, Katja Riemann and Hannelore Elsner. Of course, the ubiquitous party-mayor Klaus Wowereit, and Claudia Roth from the Greens, who is inevitable at such events could not be absent.

Angry words about Berlinale chief Dieter Kosslick or not: The Berlin hotels were fully booked as never before, and the ticket record from last year (275,000 entry tickets sold) has been probably topped again. And so many international stars at a time you meet in Germany only at the Berlinale.

Never Again a Side Table: The Best City Hotels for Singles

by Gesa Noormann February 22, 2010, 11:28 am

Valentine’s Day with its seemingly sugary interpretation of love is over and singles feel relieved: time to plan your next vacation. Are you one of the jinx, who mistakenly ended up in a family club complex last summer, or were surrounded by happy smiling couples and candlelight in the supposedly trendy restaurant? Then you have probably decided to spend the next short holiday in a cool, trendy design hotel, preferably in the metropolis. After all, the chances of finding nice interlocutors at the bar are much better here. And nobody dares to offer you the famous side table next to the kitchen…. Here are our top 5 city hotels for a single holiday:

Le General HotelThe Rockwell

1) The hotel roomz vienna is centrally located, close to all attractions and the nightlife of Vienna. This hotel has a modern design and an uncomplicated service concept. The restaurant and bar is open 24 hours and is also a hotspot for Viennese. The amazingly affordable room rates of this budget design hotel will bring you delight.

2) For Francophiles the best place to stay is the laid-back Hotel Le Général, which in one direction is only 500 meters away from the Georges Pompidou Center while in the other from the trendy quarters Bastille and Oberkampf. Franck, the extremely nice owner, has excellent knowledge about the Parisian night life.

3) In the young, hip design hotel The Rockwell in the beautiful district of Kensington the best shopping opportunities (Chelsea and Knightsbridge) are just around the corner. The innovative concept of this new 4 star hotel is characterized by a combination of tradition and modern design: traditional English style elements have been retained everywhere and in the restaurant there’s an English kitchen, however, with a modern interpretation.

4) The Casa Camper in Berlin’s trendy district Mitte is the first hotel under the flag of the trendy shoe label Camper. This new hotel is characterized by a modern, colourful design and an international audience. Individual shops, cafés and bars are within walking distance in the surrounding streets of Berlin, the capital for singles.

5) Also a metropolis for singles is New York. Recommended for an exciting short city holiday is here the hotel Room Mate Grace , kept in a young, hip design. Guests not only rent a room here: the concept of this creative, Spanish hotel chain is to provide a home and create space in a public area to establish contacts – tailor-made for singles!

Top 5 Berlin Sights

by Gesa Noormann February 18, 2010, 10:33 am

I’ve seldom had as many visitors as I get now that I live in Berlin. The German capital has become Europe’s number one hot spot. And for all of you who don’t have that friend in Berlin with an extra couch, Escapio offers you a selection of the best Berlin hotels, everything from hip to chic. Berlin’s mayor Klaus Wowereit’s now famous line about his city being „poor but sexy“ sums up this place quite succinctly. Indeed, Berlin tourists are particularly interested in experiencing that certain je ne sais quoi flair so unique to this once so divided city. Nowhere else visitors will find as many parties going on as here. New clubs, fashion labels and bands seem to burst onto the scene every day. And yet, perhaps the best song to reflect this particular Berlin mood is the ambivalent Peter Fox‘ anti-hymn hit Black to Blue“ with its telling line:„Good morning Berlin, sometimes you use to be so ugly.“

There are so many museums, exhibitions and monuments in Berlin that it’s very hard to know where best to start. And this is why we have put together our own selection of top 5 Berlin sights, just to jump-start that big city feeling for you.

1) Get things going with a simple bus ride. Take a city tour on the city’s own BVG bus line 100 from Zoologischen Garten to Alexanderplatz. The ticket will only set you back 2.10 euros for a ride that will take you all the way across town along sites that include a great look at the Tiergarten, Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and Hackescher Markt. And while you’re at it you can enjoy the innovative audio guide from Culture-to-Go. Berlin creative artists’ narratives turn this bus ride into an amusing and highly informative city tour.

2) Of all the Berlin museums, the Pergamon Museum is arguably the most impressive. Constructed between 1910 and 1930 on the city’s famous Museum Island (the island itself a sight worth seeing), it has attained world-wide fame primarily through the awe-inspiring reconstructions of three particularly famous ancient world structures – the colossal Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus and the stunning blue Ishtar Gate, with its accompanying Procession Road to Babylon and Mshatta Facade.

3) Taking in a concert at the Berlin Philharmonie is an absolute must for any music enthusiast who visits Berlin. And even if Sir Simon Rattle may not be conducting when you attend, this imposing concert hall always offers its listeners an unforgettable sound experience. Many concerts are booked out months in advance of course, but with a little luck you might get one of the tickets that were returned.

4) In order to get a true feel for the many-faceted and sometimes subtle differences between the long-divided eastern and western sides of the city, the best way to go is to take a closer look at two particularly representative districts: The elegant stores, cafes and restaurants located on streets near Charlottenburg’s Savignyplatz are perfect examples of the old West-Berlin culture. Berlin-Mitte in the east, on the other hand, is despite some overly zealous reconstruction work in places. An inviting district due to the large number of original structures built in the old Berliner building style still standing and the lively art and art gallery scene that has established itself there. Dozens of galleries have popped up along Auguststraße, Oranienburger Straße and Linienstraße. And directly in the hip Oranienburger Straße neighborhood is where you can find the chic design hotel Casa Camper where not just scene-insiders feel at home.

5) Prenzlauer Berg’s Kulturbrauerei offers a huge array of concerts, films and other cultural events. Assorted cafes and restaurants are housed directly in the old brewery complex, but nothing is stopping you from also stepping outside and taking a little walk along Kastanienallee and plunge yet a bit deeper into the another wild side of the bustling Berlin scene.

Berlinale: Stars on the red carpet

by Sonja Franke February 12, 2010, 10:03 am

Attentive readers of the Escapio weblog surely will have read the worthwhile article on Berlinale 2010. But as with every “gossip” topic, you never get tired of announcing the latest news.

So let us take stock – in the case of such a major event usually consisting of name-dropping. Which celebrities will attend? What will they wear? And above all: who is going to stay in which hotel?

A few of these world-shaking questions have already been answered, thus I would like to focus on the hotels in Berlin more suited to visitors than to stars and starlets.

So the celebrity hotspots Grand Hyatt Berlin, Hotel The Mandala and Hotel Q are out of the question. In the latter, beds are prepared not only for VIPs like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but also for Amy Winehouse, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Mischa Barton and Barbara Becker. However, in the Spree metropolis there are still some recommendable hotels that are in the center but not yet overbooked.

Just take Adele Designhotel in the trendy district Prenzlauer Berg. Only 14 bedrooms, all of them furnished in art deco style, are available here. The “Alex” or Alexanderplatz is in five minutes walking distance, if you do not prefer the busy Kollwitzplatz that you can also reach by foot in five minutes.

Hotel AdeleHotel Adele

Directly at the above mentioned “Alex”, there is the famous Park Inn Berlin, the former Forum Hotel, which was the flagship hotel of the GDR. It is the best place for people who want to enjoy a view over (almost) the entire town.

Park Inn BerlinPark Inn Berlin

1012 bedrooms and a height of 150 meters are superlatives even for Berlin. Needless to say, the Berlinale hotspots are fast and easy to reach from the Park Inn as well.

Finally, an insider’s tip for those who want piece and quiet, at least at night: the dignified ALMA Schlosshotel im Grunewald fits that purpose best.

ALMA Schlosshotel GrunewaldALMA Schlosshotel Grunewald

The thoroughly noble house offers an exclusive five-star atmosphere, a fantastic spa and an interior design by fashion czar Karl Lagerfeld himself. Of course, here the same applies as for the other hotels: both by public transport and by car you are in no time at the center of events of Berlinale.

Berlinale 2010: The Hotels of the Stars

by Gesa Noormann February 4, 2010, 9:43 am

Renée Zellweger will participate in the jury of the 60th Berlinale. She will be one of the high-profile members of the jury headed by German director Werner Herzog. Not only the committee, which awards the famous “Bären” is prominent: a veritable parade of movie stars is expected at the jubilee festival, including director Martin Scorsese (67) with main actor Leonardo DiCaprio (35), actor Sir Ben Kingsley (65) and Sex and the City star Kim Catrall. And “with the Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan (44) even some Bollywood feeling could arise”, festival director Dieter Kosslick (61) announced according to bild.de. Whoever likes to see a close up of his personal favourite can mingle with the fan crowd at the Potsdamer Platz, where the stars are strutting down the red carpet to the premieres. However, to capture a glimpse or even an autograph is rather difficult considering the crowd. Amateur paparazzis have better chances for success when they drop by at the hotels where the stars are accommodated during their stay in Berlin and hold out long enough in the lobby until the beloved he or she passes by.

Grand Hyatt BerlinHotel Q!

The highest concentration of celebrities should be at the Grand Hyatt Berlin. This exclusive luxury hotel with a privileged location at the Potsdamer Platz is also hosting the press conferences this year. That’s why – according to hotel management – pretty much every VIP should pass by here sometime. Also located at the Potsdamer Platz is the five star hotel The Mandala, whose entrance is as discreet as the hotel itself: Several stars will most certainly sleep in this hot spot of Berlin’s hotel scene, but who exactly … Traditionally well occupied by celebrities is the Hotel Q!, where not only Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie spent the night, but also Amy Winehouse, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Mischa Barton and Barbara Becker. Recently, one of the Ochsenknecht boys has been sighted in the bar – no wonder, since this family is a long-stay guest here.

Bread & Butter Berlin: Fashion Show 2010 in Tempelhof

by Holly Maguire January 19, 2010, 9:53 am

After several years in exile, the Bread & Butter fashion show made a welcome return to Berlin last year. The 2010 winter shows take place in the former airport Tempelhof from 20th to 22nd January – this year with a Country theme. Opening the show are Berlin country rock cover band The Boss Hoss, who have enjoyed moderate success with unusual interpretations of country songs. The fashion halls in hangars and on the runway are fully booked and will play host to the 2011/12 season’s streetwear collections from designers including Diesel, Boss Orange, Lacoste, Levi’s and G-Star. According to Bread & Butter’s director Karl-Heinz Müller, the fashion show will be more successful than ever – despite the financial crisis. “The exhibitors’ interests remain unchanged,” says M…üller in an interview with Fashion-Community Styleranking. “Bread & Butter is the leading platform for street and urban wear in Europe, if not worldwide.”

The event’s networking hotspot is the Original Sin Saloon with it’s western-style atmosphere. With live music every night, there is an emphasis on meet and greet in the restaurant where guests can pull on a pair of old Levi’s and cool-again cowboy boots to fit in with the running theme.

Inn Sight City Apartments Arcotel Velvet
For anyone yet to book accommodation, Escapio has some of the few remaining rooms in some of Berlin’s hippest hotels. Arcotel Velvet on the trendy Oranienburger Straße or the Inn Sight City Appartments in Prenzlauer Berg will satisfy the tastes of the fussiest fashionistas -  with affordable prices even during Bread & Butter. Anyone desiring an extra luxurious and stylish stay should check into The Mandala Hotel with its unbeatable Potsdamer Platz location. But be quick: don’t miss out on the last available rooms or you’ll end up stuck in an airport hotel!

The Mandala Ellington Lounge
One of the fashion community’s favourite hotels, the Ellington, is already fully booked but rub shoulders with the stars and catch DJane Leslie von JazzRadio 101.9 on 21st January who will be mixing the award winning electro jazz session “White Room” live in the Ellington’s lounge. Don’t miss the delicious cocktails during happy hour: 50% off between 9 and 10pm.

Staying at an art hotel, sleeping in unique hotel rooms

by Justyna Piepiorka January 5, 2010, 1:41 pm

White snow outside the window and temperatures around the freezing point make us dream of a warm, cosy bed… isn’t this the perfect time to relax and read a good book? And why not combine pleasure with even more pleasure? Each of the following ten hotels is a work of art in itself, so charming and unique that you will not want to leave your hotel room…

  1. ART HOTEL Atelier sul Mare, Tusa, Sicily: The hotel offers memorable experiences since its main feature is the presence of many important contemporary artworks of well known artists inside and outside the hotel. In fact 20 out of 40 rooms were realized by important internationally recognized artists like e.g. Danielle Mitterand, Agnese Purgatorio or Antonio Presti.
  2. Arte Luise Kunsthotel, Berlin, Germany: This city hotel calls itself a “gallery in which to stay overnight” and thus briefly sums up its unique concept. The idea: Every room in the Arte Luise Kunsthotel in Berlin has been designed by a well known artist according to his/her ideas. No room is like an other in any way—some make you laugh, some make you think, and others are just plain pretty.                                                 Atelier Sul Mare Arte Luise Kunsthotel
  3. ART Fabrik Hotel, Wuppertal, Germany: This historic hotel makes room for art and vacation in North Rhine Westphalia. The idea: A variety of artists are given a studio for free at the ART Fabrik Hotel. In return they let the guests of the hotel observe them as they work. All of the public rooms in the family hotel have been designed by artists. More than 50 artists have had a hand in the decor of the art and design restaurants, the Persian hammams, the gallery and the studios with the artists café.
  4. art’otel berlin city center west by park plaza, Berlin, Germany: The art’otel berlin city centre west by Park Plaza combines travel, art, photography and design to create a unique ambience. Dedicated to Andy Warhol, the hotel features a Warhol exhibition comprising of 221 items and photographs by Christopher Makos. Visit the art’otel’s Factory restaurant, where your can enjoy delicious modern cuisine amid a welcoming atmosphere.                                                            Art Fabrik Hotel art`otel berlin city center west
  5. Hotel Fox, Copenhagen, Denmark: This completely crazy design hotel in the center of Copenhagen features 61 uniquely furnished rooms. International artists from areas such as graphic design, street art, and illustrations have designed the Hotel Fox, making it the unchallenged leader of lifestyle hotels in Copenhagen. The interior design ranges from crazily funny to clear and straightforward to full of details in the themed rooms to totally eccentric design ideas.
  6. B&B Antica Dimora Residenza D’Arte, Torrita di Siena, Tuscany, Italy: Those who are looking for something a bit more exciting than a conventional countryside vacation in Italy will love this hotel. Looked upon from outside, the country house hotel is a splendid romantic manor house, while inside it’s the touches of modern art that dominate the ambiance. The ancient rooms are equipped with many original objects of art by the well-known Italian modern artist Anna Izzo, who also happens to be the mother of the hotel’s owner. She has created a mayor part of the furniture and interior design throughout the place.                                             Hotel Fox Antica Dimora Residenza d
  7. art’ otel budapest, by Park Plaza, Budapest, Hungary: This hotel in Budapest was decorated with the help of American creator of modern art Donald Sultan. His design ideas and art pieces give the lifestyle hotel a unique character. The second highlight of the art’ otel Budapest is the fantastic view out over the Danube to the banks on the Pest side of the city with the parliament building, and the famous Chain Bridge.
  8. art’otel dresden, by Park Plaza, Dresden, Germany: As all the design hotels in the art’otel group, this city hotel in Dresden is also centered on modern art. That goes for many aspects of this hotel: For one, the art’otel dresden has been designed by modern artists and designers from the lobby to the roof. Also, this hotel offers the possibility to hold events of all kinds in the attached art gallery.                    art`otel budapest art`otel dresden
  9. Villa Warhol, Marrakech, Morocco: Considering its name, the interior of the Villa Warhol comes as no surprise. This villa is a romantic hotel in the Palmeraie quarter of Marrakech that combines Moroccan lifestyle with pop art. What a great idea, what a way of carrying it out, what a magical result: bright colors are central to Oriental interior design. This small city hotel has fused two worlds with much in common. The rooms with their brilliant colors and a mix of classic and modern art, such as Andy Warhol reprints on the walls, offer an incredibly pretty atmosphere.
  10. Classical BabyGrand Hotel, Athens, Greece: 10 international artists from the areas of urban art and graffiti art have created a unique design hotel with New York charm in the midst of Athens. It has 79 rooms and suites, each of which is absolutely exceptional and highly individual in its style. The 55 Graffiti rooms are each a walk-in piece of art in itself. Depending on the room, you can spend the night in Smurf Village, in the midst of a roaring waterfall, or join Spiderman in climbing up the walls of this original city hotel. This is truly the perfect luxury hotel in Athens for anyone wanting their world in a bit more color.                                                                                                        Villa Warhol Classical BabyGrand Hotel
