With numerous markets dotted all over the city, for us the perfect excuse for a warming after work drink. Even the tamest of partygoers have been known to guzzle down a fair few fruity Glühwein, and our Area Manager Saniye Laux challenges any visitors to Berlin to beat her six-markets-in-one-weekend extravaganza… But to start, here are Top 5 Christmas Markets in Berlin, with the perfect hotels to curl up in after all the festive fun.

1. Saniye’s favourite is the Gendarmenmarkt WeihnachtsZauber (Christmas magic) which keeps away the riffraff with a 1€ entry price and ensures upmarket entertainment with ballet, choirs of suited pensioners and an enormous disco ball glittering away behind the columns of the Konzerthaus between the almost identical German and French cathedrals. Fall out of bed: Sofitel Berlin Gendarmenmarkt

2. In Berlin Mitte, Alexanderplatz offers a kitschy fairground complete with rowdy teenagers, candyfloss and thrilling rides to throw you almost as high up as the Fernsehturm. Stay on that high: Park Inn Alexanderplatz

3. In stylish Prenzlauer Berg, the Scandinavian Lucia Weihnachtsmarkt awaits you at the Kulturbrauerei complete with grog, Swedish meatballs, an Absinthe stand and a fox-fur clad Robin Hood like bartender. Snuggle up in a tepee and mosey around soaking up the friendly atmosphere. Just a couple of tram stops away: Arcotel Velvet

4. The nostalgic market centred around the Opernpalais is the ideal place to soak up the architecture and culture by Unter den Linden opposite the Humbolt university and just a stone’s throw from Museuminsel and Brandenburger Tor. Sightseeing from: Arcotel John F

5. Combine a shopping spree with Berlin’s most popular Christmas market at the Gedächtniskirche. Designer shops on Ku’damm, With galleries like the Helmut Newton collection, the zoo and great eateries like 12 Apostel pizza restaurant on Savignyplatz nearby. Right on the doorstep of: Ellington Hotel Berlin

Very elegant and relaxing description of holiday get away. It’s nice to experience some traditional fun at the Frankfurt Christmas Markets, then travel back to Berlin for a change of mood.

Unlike Gesa, my own childhood was spent climbing trees and cosying up at night with my numerous siblings in various campsites, or admiring the mismatched interiors of delightful 2* motels whilst moseying across Europe. In my tender years, I’ve found cultural enrichment in the French Alps, Spain and Bavaria, interspersed with fleeting trips to the Caribbean and a grubby month on the southeast Asian backpacker trail… anywhere with decent weather, good food and great people. I’ve been lucky enough to indulge in lavish beachside retreats and step out from grand, opulent hotels into big city shopping paradises; however, the mouldy student digs, bamboo huts, bumpy trains and deserted beaches along the way have ultimately made me appreciate the luxury, style and design that a seriously sexy hotel should offer.
